Only newly acquired. Because other resultant faculties are not present at that time. (A spontaneously born being is born complete with faculties, so the five roots are obtained simultaneously. The attainment of indeterminate resultants does not occur sequentially, but is considered to occur simultaneously.) If one obtains them in this way at birth, then how many will one relinquish together at death? (Remaining in an obscured and indeterminate mind and an afflicted mind.) At the time of death in the formless realms, the life faculty, the mind faculty, and the faculty of equanimity will cease simultaneously. It is said that this is in reference to a mind that is in a state of virtue, and not to a death that is a transference. When dying in the form realm, all spontaneously born beings are born and die complete with faculties, so the five roots of the eye, etc., and the three previously mentioned, a total of eight, will cease simultaneously. In the desire realm, if a spontaneously born being with two sexes (complete with faculties) dies, then seven physical roots and three such as the life faculty, a total of ten, will cease. If it is a being with one sex (either male or female), then nine will cease. If it is a being without sex, then (the three roots of life, etc., and the five roots of the eye, etc.) eight will cease. (There are also spontaneously born beings in the desire realm who die without complete faculties.) Thus, for those who die simultaneously (the spontaneously born), this is the case. (Those who die simultaneously are spontaneously born.) When someone born from the first three birth places, such as womb-born, dies and transmigrates, it is a gradual death and transmigration, so for them (because the eyes, etc., have ceased earlier, finally) the body, life, equanimity, and mind, these four will cease (simultaneously). All of these are spoken of in terms of (the three death minds) obscured and indeterminate (mind) and afflicted mind, but for those who die while remaining in a virtuous, innate mind, in all three realms (the six situations), on top of the previous (three, etc.), adding the five roots of faith, etc., these roots will cease simultaneously, such as the eight ceasing in the formless realm, etc. Here, it is not said that the undefiled faculties cease at death, because they are neither resultant nor death mind, and death is not the cause of their abandonment.
