Having received empowerment, one offers a begging bowl or Dharma robes, or any of the necessities for the life of a renunciate, to the Sangha or an individual. Thinking, "Entering into the fourth dhyana, the highest of its kind, and arising from that, may whatever is the fruition of my enjoyment be transformed into the fruition of life," one generates this thought and also speaks these words. Thus, whatever is the fruition of enjoyment will be transformed into the fruition of life. The Arhat who extends his life, as stated in the scriptures, what kind of fruition does this become? If a fruition other than the corresponding one cannot be changed at will, then if one wishes to keep it, it remains, and if one wishes to abandon it, it is abandoned. Why is that? Some say that it is only the fruition of the immediately experienced karma (of the three doors' virtuous, contaminated actions). Some say that not all Arhats can extend their lives, but those who die prematurely (before their lifespan is exhausted), with the remaining lifespan, wish to draw it forth by offering goods to the Sangha (through the power of the highest dhyana). According to this, the statement that the fruition of enjoyment turns into life is understood as merely a designation of that fruition as the fruition of (previously) drawing forth (through aspiration). Bhikkhu Dbyangs grogs (Melodious Voice) says that through the power of dhyana, the elements that accord with (or contradict) life, which operate in the realm of form, are made manifest. Because one lengthens (or shortens) life through that power, it is not fruition. The statement that the fruition of enjoyment turns into life is a designation, and the explanation that the life faculty is spoken of as fruition is because it is spoken of as the primary one. (According to both the transformation of the fruition of enjoyment into life and the desire to draw forth the remaining life, life is the fruition of previous karma, while enjoyment and aspiration are merely the conditions for transforming it.) The teacher believes that solely through the power of samadhi, one can reverse the fixed time of life determined by previous karma, and thus one wishes to control the life newly born from samadhi. According to this and Dbyangs grogs's view, the statement that life is fruition is made with respect to ordinary people.

From the perspective of what is most important, there are times when one can act as one pleases. Similarly, relinquishing life also (if one does not see a way to sustain it with medicine, etc.), after arising from the fourth dhyana, offering any object whatsoever. Offering to the Sangha (or to someone who has just arisen from cessation, etc.), (having entered the highest fourth dhyana and arising from it) generating the thought and speaking the words, "May the maturation of my life be transformed into the maturation of enjoyment," thus one relinquishes life. (The scriptures say that the maturation of enjoyment of the highest dhyana will be transformed into the maturation of life; these are the actions of body, speech, and mind. If one relinquishes, it will be reversed.) Moreover, one relinquishes life when, being alive, one does not see benefit or need for others, and sees one's own body as being like a disease, etc. As it says in the Vinayavibhaṅga: (Śāriputra said to Upasena) "Brahmacarya is well practiced here, and the path is also extremely cultivated, one becomes happy when life is exhausted, like a person freed from all diseases." It is like that. Maintaining life is because one sees benefit for others and the continuation of the teachings, etc. (for the sake of samadhi and controlling the mind and abandoning afflictions). Arhats who are free from both male and female aspects, who can use time and non-time, only among the people of the three continents (because of sharp faculties) can extend life. (Like the sixteen Arhats.) Then, in the Cullavagga, it says that the Blessed One blessed the formations of life and then relinquished the formations of life. What is the difference between life and vitality? Some say there is no difference at all. Because the *Entering into Wisdom* says, "What is the faculty of life? It is the life of the three realms." (Vaibhāṣika) they say. Some say that the result of past karma is life, and the result of present karma is vitality. In order, by the power of karma, one abides in accordance with one's kind, and lives in between other times. The use of the plural word "etc." indicates that relinquishing and maintaining are done on the continuum of many moments of the formations of life, while for a single moment, because the time is too short, there is no relinquishing or blessing.
