Therefore, Gampopa explains that this is to illustrate "it is so." The word "etc." includes: the root that makes the unknowing know everything is abandoning what is abandoned by the path of seeing; the root that knows everything is abandoning what is abandoned by the path of meditation; the root that possesses all knowledge is able to abide in the happiness of seeing the Dharma, because by being liberated from afflictions, one can separately experience the happiness of mind and body and the happiness of extreme pliancy. This is a summary. Second, explaining the definite number of roots: If because of being able to control, it is a root, then ignorance, etc., also control actions, etc.; and the mouth, hands, feet, buttocks, and genitals also respectively control speaking, taking food, etc., walking, excreting urine and feces, and universal joy, so would they become roots? Merely acting as a cause is not considered a root, but rather according to the need, the sutra speaks of twenty-two roots, because they are the basis and nature of complete defilement and purification, or because of the result. Among them, from the perspective of the basis of sentient beings' substance, the six roots of eye, etc., are the support of mind and consciousness. From the perspective of distinguishing the differences of sentient beings, there are the male and female roots. From the perspective of sentient beings abiding in the same category, the life root is spoken of. Thus, these nine roots are the basis of complete defilement. Feelings are pointed out as the nature of complete defilement or as its result. The five roots of faith, etc., are the basis of purification because they can accumulate merit. The last three roots are pointed out as purifying or as the nature of purification. Thus, the number of roots corresponds to the number of bases and natures of complete defilement and purification. Or, other schools believe that this is spoken from the perspective of entering and leaving samsara. The support for entering samsara is the six roots, because they are the basis of sentient beings' substance, and because they rely on the six sense bases of the intermediate state to connect to the continuity of the next life.

Birth in samsara is due to the male and female faculties, because they are the source of birth. Although it is not the case for miraculous birth, etc., it is said so because it is the main cause. What causes those sentient beings to exist is the faculty of life, and what sentient beings closely enjoy are the five, such as pleasure. Thus, considering the empowerment to enter samsara, there are fourteen. Just as entering samsara has four aspects: basis, birth, existence, and enjoyment, similarly, turning away from samsara also has basis, birth, existence, and enjoyment. The enjoyment of existence is the eight faculties that are different from the previous ones. Among them, the basis for turning away is the five, such as faith, because relying on them, the supramundane path is made manifest. Birth into complete purification is the faculty of making the unknown known, because it is the first birth in the uncontaminated. Existing in complete purification is the faculty of complete knowledge, because the nine aspects of the path of meditation exist continuously. Closely enjoying complete purification is the faculty of possessing complete knowledge, because one individually experiences joy and happiness through complete liberation. From the Madhyāntavibhāga: 'Grasping, existence, and non-interruption, enjoyment, and the two purities, are for this.' That is, the six, such as the eye, and life, and the two, male and female, and the five feelings, and the five, such as faith, and the three, such as complete knowledge, respectively, are grasping the six objects, existing without dying, the continuity of those who live by lineage, closely enjoying the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, worldly purity, and because of the power over supramundane purity, it is definitively taught that there are twenty-two faculties.

The feeling that arises in the retinue is called suffering. The feeling of serenity that arises in those retinues is the sense of pleasure, and the feeling that brings benefit is serenity. Not only is the serene feeling that arises in the retinue of the five consciousnesses happiness, but in the third dhyana, the serenity that arises in the retinue of the mind, that is, the consciousness, is the sense of pleasure. Because there are no five sense consciousnesses there, there is no physical sensation; and because one is free from attachment to joy, that serenity is also not mental happiness. So, what is mental happiness? Other than the third dhyana, in the desire realm and the first and second dhyanas, the serene feeling that arises in the retinue of consciousness is mental happiness. Because one is not free from attachment to joy, the serenity that arises in the retinue of the mind in those realms is joy. So, what is the difference between mental happiness and mind happiness? The mental joy from the desire realm to the second dhyana arises merely through conceptual thought and is unstable, that is mental happiness. In the third dhyana, the stable serenity of the mind is the sense of mental happiness. It is also known from the sutras that there is no joy but there is happiness in the third dhyana. Because one is free from attachment to joy, one abides in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, and the body experiences happiness, which the noble ones call mindfulness, practicing happiness in equanimity. It is said that one has completed the third dhyana without joy and abides, and so on. The feeling that arises in the retinue of the mind, that is, the consciousness, which is not serenity, is the sense of mental unhappiness. The sense of equanimity is the intermediate feeling between those feelings mentioned earlier. Is it physical or mental? The intermediate between body and mind is collectively established as equanimity. Why? Because it arises on its own without conceptual thought. Mental pleasure and pain arise only through conceptual thought, but physical pleasure and pain do not. Physical pleasure and pain arise from what is beneficial and harmful to the body, so those are separate. And equanimity is without conceptual thought.
