There is also abiding with increase, like taste. Even without increase, there is the abiding of the other, which is like the body of hell.) The realm of sound is born from maturation; the form of maturation (is that which is severed and does not connect), and it does not arise merely by intention. But sound (is severed and connects and expresses) arises by the power of intention. Then, in the treatise of imputation, it says: The characteristics of the voice and tone of the Tathagata, listen to how one can obtain them. By abandoning harsh words and jokes, one will obtain the characteristics of the Tathagata. (The Teacher said.) It is said to be born from maturation, In the miscellaneous sections of the Vinaya, it says: (O fortunate one,) the beautiful and excellent voice is also the result of offering bells to the stupa of the Buddha Krakucchanda in the past, and when born as a cuckoo, having faith in the Buddha Kashyapa, a beautiful voice arose and circumambulated the stupa. If it is said that this is contradictory, then the Vaibhashikas of the Lower Sun believe that from those actions, the elements of the nature of maturation are accomplished, and from that, a sound as beautiful as the voice of Brahma arises, so it is the third generation. The Kashmiris say that from action arises the element born of maturation, from that arises increase, from that arises the same cause, and from that arises the tone of voice, so it is the fifth generation. According to both, it is said that it comes from those transmissions, but it is not actually so, because then it would become impossible to arise merely by intention, and it would become the fault of being severed and not connected. (If it does not become maturation just like that, then feeling is the same, it arises from action, and feeling arises from that, if you say that, it is not the same, because sound arises as desired, and some bodily feelings arise even if you don't want them, so it is maturation, and some of the transformations of the object's conditions now are maturation.) Therefore, for sound, (the body grows and the voice gets louder, so) there is increase, and (there is a similar sequel, so) there is birth from the same cause, it should be understood that way. Birth from the same cause and birth from maturation are the seven realms of mind and the realm of phenomena, that is, those eight unobstructed ones, because there is the ability.

Because there are causes produced by concomitance and pervasiveness, and causes produced by maturation, etc., but there is no production by increase. Because those eight do not abide in accumulation, there is no increase of form. The remaining elements, namely the four: form, smell, taste, and touch, have all three types, such as those produced by maturation. Those in the aggregate of faculties have all three types, and the external ones exist because they are produced by the equiflow cause. Fifth, explaining the five, such as substance existence, etc., among the eighteen elements, the one that is permanent and stable as a substance and possesses existence in its essence is the element of dharma, a part of which is unconditioned. In this case, substance existence refers to being permanent and stable, having the ability to function, being self-established, and four others different from these. Here, the first one is emphasized. The remaining elements are established as not having a permanent and stable substance (because they are conditioned). Among these elements, a portion of the last three elements—mind, dharma, and mind-consciousness—are moments that do not arise from the equiflow cause (there are also). What are these? The three uncontaminated elements of mind, dharma, and mind-consciousness that exist in the first moment of the assemblage of the forbearance of knowledge of dharma in suffering, since everything below the supreme mundane dharma is contaminated, without a prior uncontaminated one (this is also the final moment, and since it is the moment of completion of the forbearance of dharma in suffering, this is also the second final moment onwards, which arises from the equiflow cause). These indicate a specific exclusion from the general case of arising from the equiflow cause, arising from maturation, and the eight unobstructed ones. The three, mind, etc. (of the first uncontaminated moment), do not arise from the equiflow cause and maturation. A portion of the dharma element, the unconditioned and permanent, is to show that it is not all three arising. (All conditioned phenomena that are not the first moment of the first uncontaminated moment arise from the equiflow cause). So, does one newly acquire the eye-consciousness element from not possessing the eye element? There are four possibilities. Thus, the eye element and the eye-consciousness element, each...
