If there is contact with the object, then those in meditative absorption in the desire realm will not generate the direct perception of divine eyes and ears, just as the nose and so forth grasp by contacting the object, and direct perception is impossible. If there is no contact, will they not grasp all forms that are distant and obstructed, and so forth? The answer is: that is also the same with contact; how do they not grasp eye medicine and the smell that arises together with oneself, and so forth? However, not grasping other objects is a difference in ability, just like a magnet attracting iron.) The three realms of nose, tongue, and body grasp by contacting the object, other than when there is no contact. (Even the smell that is in a distant place) cannot be grasped without inhaling. Moreover, they do not grasp smells and so forth that are obstructed by others. The term "contact" refers to (the atoms of the sense faculty and the object) being in a state of close connection. That refers to being in a state without (other atoms) in between, and is not referring to touch. (That is also referring to the state where there are no other atoms in between and the two are closely connected, which is the meaning of contact.) If they touch from all directions, the atoms will mix (and will not be able to form coarse objects). If they touch from one direction, they will become part-possessing, therefore atoms are not touchable, but the state of being accumulated is touchable, but that is considered to have parts, so there is no fault. Also, the three cases of nose and so forth being said to contact the object refer to the ultimate atoms of the sense faculty and the ultimate atoms of the object being grasped equally. Because whatever is in contact is grasped, and whatever is not in contact is not grasped. Mind is not corporeal, so it cannot be measured. And the two, eye and ear, are uncertain; sometimes they grasp larger than the sense faculty, sometimes smaller, and sometimes equally. (Because they focus on the accumulation, they are not produced by a single atom.) Also, among those realms, the basis of the realm of the consciousness of the last, mind, is only the mind that has just ceased in the past. And the basis of the five, eye consciousness and so forth, is the eye and so forth, which are the sense faculties that arise together with speech, which are corporeal and present. The word "also" is for the purpose of including that mind is also past. Here, in the commentary, because of that very reason, whatever is the object of the basis of eye consciousness is similar to that.

If asked, is the object of the immediately preceding condition also a basis? Answer: There are four possibilities, that is, with respect to the five aggregates of consciousness, the five sense faculties with form are the objects of the five consciousnesses, but they are not mind and mental factors, therefore, the similar immediately preceding condition is not the object, hence the first possibility. The mental factors of the dharma realm that have just ceased are the arising of mind and mental factors. The sutra says "not the last immediately preceding," hence the second possibility. (Because the six consciousnesses are definitely based on the six sense faculties.) The immediately preceding mind is both, hence the third possibility. The five external form realms and the non-associated formations of the dharma realm are neither, hence the fourth possibility. With respect to mind consciousness, the previous mind is the basis, and its similarity is both the object of the immediately preceding condition, hence the third possibility. The second and fourth possibilities are the same as previously stated. The first possibility does not exist, because whatever is the basis of mind consciousness is also its similar immediately preceding condition. If it is said that eye consciousness and so on are based on both mind and eye and so on, and also arise from form and so on, then why is it said to be eye consciousness and so on, and not form consciousness and so on? Because the change of eye and so on causes the eye consciousness and so on to change accordingly. Because benefit and harm will produce feelings of pleasure and pain and are corresponding. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "If seeing far is the measure, one should rely on the vulture to come back here." Just as the eyes of a vulture are naturally bright, even if the object is not clear, eye consciousness can arise even when separated by many yojanas. The ears and so on are also the same, because whether the faculty is clear or not will produce clear or unclear consciousness. The change of form and so on does not necessarily cause the change of consciousness. (The feeling of good or bad object changes into pleasure or pain because of the presence or absence of attachment to the object or attachment to desire. If the faculty is clear, even if the object is not clear, knowledge arises clearly like a vulture. If the faculty is not clear, even if the object is clear, it is not so.) Therefore, the basis of eye consciousness and so on is eye and so on.
