They are their respective places. Because the sense faculties, which are the basis of eye consciousness and so on, are only those sense faculties, and because those sense faculties, depending on the same continuum and different continuums, are the uncommon cause of generating consciousness, therefore, eye consciousness and so on are shown as the door of the sense faculties of their own objects, like the sound of a drum and a barley sprout. Because form and other objects and mind are the common cause of both eye consciousness and so on and mind consciousness, they are not shown by them. (Form is the common cause of consciousness, it is the cause of both eye consciousness and mind consciousness, while the eye is only the cause of eye consciousness and its retinue, so it is not a common cause. Form is the cause of the common consciousness of persons, because it can generate the eye consciousness and mind consciousness of many persons, while the eye can only generate the eye consciousness of the same continuum, so it is not a common cause.) Therefore, it is also said in the Compendium of Valid Cognition: "Because of the uncommon cause, its name is made by the sense faculties." It is said like that. Furthermore, if the body stays where, the eye (mind and body) sees form, and when hearing sounds and so on with the ear and so on, are the body and eye and so on, and form and so on, and consciousnesses in the same place or different places? In order to show that there are different places and the same place, the body and so on are mentioned. (Regarding this, when a desire realm being sees form with the eye of his own place, everything is of his own place. When a desire realm being sees the form of the second and third dhyanas with the eye of the fourth dhyana, the four places are different, and for others, it should be applied accordingly. The four places are the same, only in the desire realm and the first dhyana, because beyond that there is no sense consciousness of one's own place. If the sense faculty with a basis, or only seeing objects by consciousness, etc., if the upper three dhyanas do not manifest sense consciousness, then it would follow that one cannot see objects, etc.) The body here refers to the body that is the basis. Regarding this, the five material sense faculties such as the eye and the three object form, sound, and touch (are the five places), are in the desire realm and the four dhyanas. The three consciousnesses of eye, nose, and body are only in the desire realm and the first dhyana. Smell, taste, and nose, tongue,

Consciousness is solely of its own ground in the desire realm. The body of a higher realm does not rely on the eye of a lower realm, because the higher realm has a superior eye, so there is no need for the eye of the lower realm. Therefore, the eye of its own ground or the eye of the higher ground is the basis. The object of the lower eye is not the form of the higher ground, because the form of the higher ground is subtle, so it cannot see it. Therefore, the form of one's own ground and the lower ground is the object of the eye. (Therefore, the eye of the desire realm is the fifth ground from the first to the fourth ground.) The consciousness of the eye of the higher ground also does not rely on the eye of the lower ground, because the superior consciousness of the higher ground does not rely on the inferior eye of the lower ground. (If it relies, then that sense consciousness should not see the object of its own ground, because the eye on which it relies does not see the object of the higher ground, because the sense consciousness arises simultaneously with the sense organ and the object on which it relies. Exception.) The consciousness of the lower (first dhyana) and its own ground are the basis. However, the so-called consciousness of the lower ground as the basis also does not mean that the consciousness of the desire realm relies on the eye of the first dhyana, because the first dhyana has superior consciousness (when it manifests), so there is no need for it. Therefore, it is said that there is no five-door consciousness in one's own ground above the second dhyana, because when looking at form above the second dhyana, the eye consciousness of the first dhyana manifests. If so, the consciousness sees the form of the higher ground, and relying on which body, by the consciousness of which ground does it rely and see the form? The consciousness of the eye (only), the form of that (ground) is seen in all grounds, that is, all the forms of its own ground, the lower ground, and the self-ground of the higher ground are seen. That is also in terms of each case, but there is this difference: the eye consciousness of the desire realm only sees the form of its own ground, and does not see the form of the higher ground, because it does not enter into the meaning of the kalpa. Therefore, here it is said in terms of the ground of the eye consciousness of the first dhyana seeing the form of its own ground, the lower ground, and the self-ground of the higher ground. (Also, if the eye consciousness of the first dhyana relies on the eye of the fourth dhyana, then it sees all the forms of the five. Oh
