Lalo! The six consciousnesses are generally the mind element. Whatever immediately follows another consciousness without interruption is its basis, but what is interrupted is not its basis. The past is the basis of whatever future consciousness is not interrupted by that intermediate one. Therefore, in a state of mindlessness, even if the entering mind of meditative absorption has passed for a long time, because it is not interrupted by other consciousnesses, the entering mind is the basis for the rising mind of emergence from absorption.) What is the purpose of this? It is to strongly prove that the support of the sixth, the mental consciousness, the co-existing condition, is the sense faculty. If it is shown that the co-existing condition of the eye consciousness element, etc., is the eye element, etc., and the mind element is not shown, then it will be doubted that the mental consciousness has no co-existing condition. Therefore, although the mind element is not different from the six consciousnesses, it is explained by dividing it into different elements. In this way, it is desired to say that the Blessed One spoke of eighteen elements. If it is not like that, if it is established as an element from the point of view of type, then there will be the fault of the number being twelve, because the six consciousnesses are included in the mind sense-sphere. If it is from the point of view of substance, then there will be the fault of seventeen, because consciousness is six substances. This is what is desired. The Crimson Robe Sect believes that the support of mental consciousness is the substance of the heart, and even though it is formless, it exists. The Yogacara practitioners believe that the afflicted mind itself is the mind element.

And because it includes the seven realms of mind. The realm of dharma includes one part of the form aggregate, non-manifesting form, and the three aggregates of feeling, perception, and volition, as well as the dharma-sphere and the dharma-realm. Here it is said that the non-manifesting (dharma) is included twice, as the टीका (Sanskrit, Devanagari, ṭīkā, commentary) says, because it belongs to both the form aggregate and the dharma-sphere, and there are no other dharmas. How is it included? It is included by its own nature, because the form aggregate, the mind-sphere, and the dharma-realm do not possess the nature of other things, just as all conditioned things are included in impermanence. Another view is that dharmas do not possess the nature of other things, so it is not appropriate for others to include others. Therefore, they include themselves. Then, how does the Buddha show that he "includes samsara"? It should be known that it is nominal because it sometimes includes and sometimes does not include, but it is not a true inclusion. (If the thirty-two included are included by the three includers, are those actions, like impermanence, self-inclusive by nature, or are they nominal others-inclusive, like the Buddha including samsara with four inclusive things?) Those are self-inclusive by nature, not nominal, because, in order, those included are the nature of those includers, because they are their own nature, and they do not possess the nature of other things. Fifth, refuting the argument that the realms are too numerous, then, because there are two eyes, ears, and noses, would there be twenty-one realms? Although it is true that there are two eyes, etc., because the two eyes are of the same kind in the nature of the eye (and have the same characteristics), and the objects of experience are the same in form, and the result is the same in the consciousness that grasps form, it is said to be one realm. The same should be understood for the ears, etc. Then, are the two unnecessary?

Oh, if it were not so, it would not change. In order to make the body of the support beautiful, the eyes and so on appear in pairs. Moreover, since karma is accumulated with desire for the two faculties, it arises due to karma, and not merely because of wanting to be beautiful. Because that would be too extreme. The teacher Sthavira Nandana thinks that it is in order to make consciousness clear. While the teacher Prince Royal explains that even one large one can accomplish it, so there is no need. But in the Vibhajyavāda, some say that the two eyes appear in order to be beautiful. Others say that it is in order to be clear. Both explanations are given. Secondly, in terms of indicating the characteristics, the meaning of piling up many dharmas is the characteristic of the aggregates. Because many things and dharmas are gathered and assembled. As it says in the sutra: Whatever form there is, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or excellent, far or near, all of these are gathered together and included in the category called the aggregate of form. From there up to the aggregate of consciousness is explained. The meaning of the sutra is that the Vibhajyavādins consider that the past and so on are form included by the three times. The internal is included by one's own continuum. Other than that is external. Or, it is the form of the internal and external sense bases. Coarse and subtle are with obstruction and without obstruction, or, the coarseness and subtlety are determined in relation to particles and so on. Inferior and excellent are with afflictions and without afflictions. Far is the past and future. Near is the present. Similarly, one should understand up to the aggregate of consciousness. However, there is this difference: coarse and subtle are dependent on the five senses and dependent on the mind, or, one should understand from karma. The venerable one says that the past and so on are indicated by their own names. Coarse and subtle are what can be apprehended by the five senses and the mind. Inferior and excellent are unpleasant and pleasant. Far and near are objects that are not apparent and apparent. One should understand similarly for feeling and so on. Far
