Because among the five ways of co-existing equally, the prior and later ones lack that way. Therefore, it should be understood that mind and mental factors are distinct. If they are distinct, then what is the difference? In the *Madhyāntavibhāga* it says, "Seeing the meaning in that is consciousness; the difference of that is mental factor." Therefore, seeing the self-nature of a thing by one's own power is mind, and seeing the difference by one's own power is mental factor. So, if when the self-nature of a thing appears to the mind, the difference also appears, then it would also become a mental factor. Because of grasping the difference. If it does not appear, then it would follow that the self-nature and the difference are not the same. Similarly, if the difference appears to the mental factor, would it also become appearing and not appearing the self-nature? To this, some say that when the self-nature appears to the mind, although the difference also appears, one does not cling to the difference but clings to the self-nature. This is not correct, because there is no clinging in non-conceptualization. Therefore, when grasping the self-nature of a thing by one's own power, although the difference does not appear by one's own power, it appears by the power of others, so one is liberated from both faults. Similarly, it should also be said of mental factors. If the self-nature and the difference are the object and the aspect, then the object and aspect of mind and mental factors would become dissimilar, because the mind focuses on the self-nature and grasps its aspect, while the mental factor focuses on the difference and grasps its aspect. If you say that, it is not correct, because mind and mental factors focus on the same object and grasp its aspect, so there is no difference between the two. However, the way of grasping the self-nature of a thing and grasping the difference is different, because the mind is merely knowing the object, while the mental factor arises as experiencing the difference of that object and so on. Even so, the way of grasping would also become non-different. Because the way of grasping of the mind comes from the object of the object and aspect, so there is no difference between the two, and the difference between self-power and other-power would also disappear, so it is necessary to answer this question. Also, in the retinue of mind with concept, when feeling and so on arise, if they are also concepts, then there would be many concepts in one continuum, because two concepts do not occur simultaneously. Like this, various concepts.

“Knowing truly that arises in sequence,” this contradicts what is said in the Pramāṇavārttika. If it is non-conceptual, then it will become non-concomitant with the mind, because the object and the entity are also not the same. If you ask this, even though feelings and so on are conceptual in the retinue of intentional conceptualization, it will not contradict the texts that understand reasoning, because that is mainly said in the sense that the two conceptualizations of the mind do not arise simultaneously. In the sutra it is said, “Sentient beings are each a stream of consciousness.” In the Sutra of Transference of Existence, it says, “The nature of mind appears as two,” which is to negate external objects. Similarly, “Appearing as attachment and so on, wanting to appear as faith and so on, afflictions and virtuous dharmas exist or do not exist,” which is to negate the Lord and so on, who are the agents of complete affliction and purification other than the mind and mental factors. Thus, having mentioned what arises incidentally, its establishment as dhātu and āyatana, the three aggregates of feeling, perception, and formation, together with the non-manifesting form, and the unconditioned phenomena previously mentioned, when established as āyatana, know that it is the dharma āyatana; when established as dhātu, know that it is called the dharma dhātu. Now, the third is about the establishment of the aggregate of consciousness and the āyatana and dhātu. The characteristic of consciousness is to individually cognize the nature of the object by its own power. Regarding this, some schools believe that there are six types of eye consciousness and so on, while most of the teachers of the Yogācāra school believe that there are eight, including these, the ālaya-vijñāna, and the afflicted mind. Because the Ratnakūṭa Sūtra says: “Just as the moon and stars dwell together in the sky, so too does the ālaya-vijñāna dwell together with the seven consciousnesses.” Also, the teacher Yangdag Denpa says that there are nine, including these eight and the stainless mind. Gawa, Lung, and others quote from the Brāhmaṇa Assembly: “Whoever dwells without a body in a cave, travels far and wanders alone, tames the mind that is difficult to tame, I say that is a Brāhmaṇa.” Thus, he spoke of the nature of the mind as being unique.
