(The six kinds of recognition are explained in this way.) Alternatively, the recognition of desire is small, the recognition of form is vast, and the recognition of formlessness is immeasurable, thus distinguishing three types. If the wisdom of the Samadhi of the noble ones has recognition, it will cling to characteristics, which contradicts the statement of liberation from clinging to characteristics. If there is no recognition, then recognition is not the all-pervasive of the mind. If this is questioned, the wisdom of the noble ones also has the distinction of being clear and unclear to itself, as well as the distinction of peace and suffering, but the statement of liberation from characteristics is liberation from clinging to the two selves, so it is liberation from the two faults. Volition is anything compounded other than the four aggregates of form, feeling, recognition, and consciousness. The classification is that mental factors other than feeling and recognition are associated volitions, and attainment and so on are non-associated volitions, divided into these two. This is because the Vaibhashikas consider non-associated volitions to be substantially existent, so it is spoken from their point of view, while other schools consider making the result manifest to be its definition. Here, if one asks whether those that arise from the mind are different from or the same as the mind, those with special fortune and so on consider them to be the same, as it is said in the Sutra of the Transference of Existence: The nature of mind appears as two, similarly appearing as attachment and so on, or it is considered to appear as faith and so on, afflictions and virtuous dharmas do not exist. Because it is said in this way. If it is different from experiencing and clinging to characteristics and so on, then it will become matter or non-existence, and the fault of becoming wisdom liberated from clinging to characteristics and so on, so it is considered in this way. Bhikkhu Śrīrājana believes that because feeling and recognition aggregates are said to be different, the other that is different from the mind is established on the state of mind. Bhikkhu Kumārajana believes that feeling, recognition, contact, and attention are different from the mind, and the other is established on the state of mind. Regarding these, the noble Asanga summarizes in the Compendium of Matters: Some śrāmaṇas and brahmins consider only the mind in name to be substantially existent, and do not accept the dharmas arising from the mind, those are also unreasonable. Why?

Thus, the refutation is made because the five are not reasonable, because there is a fault in their state, because there is no difference in the cause of action, and because it becomes contradictory to the scriptures. The meaning of this is that if feelings and so on are not established as different from the mind, then it is not reasonable to say that they are the five aggregates, because it would be too much. If it is thought that the state of mind is established as the aggregates of feelings and so on, but if the characteristics and functions of mind and feelings and so on are different, then it would be too much for things to be different, and if there is no difference, then the distinction between state and state itself is not reasonable. Because those minds and mental factors have no difference in the cause of action such as objects, senses, and attention, it is not reasonable to have differences in the results. It is also said in the sutras: Feelings, perceptions, formations, contacts, and attentions that arise simultaneously with the mind, the mind that is completely defiled by desire is not liberated, the consciousness that is completely defiled by ignorance is not seen, the mind is completely defiled by desire, purified by faith, and so on, are contradictory to the scriptures. In addition, these faults should also be stated. If the mind and mental factors are considered to be of one substance, then the co-emergent cause cannot be established, because when the mind and mental factors are explained there, they are considered to be one. If it is said that those earlier and later ones are co-emergent causes, but not because they are one at the same time, then those are not co-emergent because they are not at the same time. Furthermore, if the mind is one with virtues such as faith and non-virtues such as anger, then at that time those minds become inherently virtuous and non-virtuous, because they are the nature of inherent virtue and non-virtue. In that case, it would be too much to say that co-emergent virtue and non-virtue cannot be established. Furthermore, feelings and so on would not arise from the mind, because they are one with it. To consider cause and effect as one is the doctrine of the Samkhya heretics. It is not reasonable to say that later feelings and so on arise from the previous mind, because they are co-emergent.
