Received. Secondly, it is because it is said in the sutras that they were received from the monks. Also, in the Vibhāṣā-nyāya, it is said that the Śrāvakayāna does not include eighty thousand dharma-skandhas. As it is said in the Ānanda-sūtra, "Eighty thousand plus one dharma-skandha were received from the Bhagavan, and two from the monks." Those were heard by Ānanda while serving as an attendant for more than twenty years. It should be known that those spoken before serving as an attendant were not received by him. It is also unreasonable to say that a small amount of dharma was spoken before that, so it is unreasonable to say that those received from the monks were the ones spoken before. Also, in the commentary on the Abhidharmasamuccaya, it is said, "In the case of the Śrāvakayāna, the eighty-four thousand dharma-skandhas received by the venerable Ānanda are these three piṭakas." Also, in the scriptures of other schools, it is said that there are eighty-four thousand dharma-skandhas. Therefore, it is evident that the view that there are eighty thousand dharma-skandhas is only the view of the Kashmir Vaibhāṣikas. So, how much is the measure of each dharma-skandha? Some say that it is equal to the measure of the teachings of the dharma-skandha summarized by Śāriputra (which has six thousand ślokas). There are six thousand ślokas there, and that is one dharma-skandha, but others have mostly disappeared. In that case, eighty thousand dharma-skandhas would be (one million six hundred eighty thousand bampos), four hundred eighty million verses. (According to the Mind-Only school) In the commentary on the Abhidharmasamuccaya, it is said, "How much is the measure of one dharma-skandha? One hundred tens are a dharma-skandha, which is called a thousand." Thus, it is said that each dharma-skandha has a thousand verses. In that same text, it is said, "According to this method of counting, eighty-four thousand dharma-skandhas are eight hundred forty million verses." The measure of a verse is that each verse has thirty-two Indian letters, according to the teacher Dharmamitra.

Because it is said that there are thirty-two kinds of taming methods, in Tibetan it becomes twenty-eight words. Others say that each paragraph that shows the meaning of skandhas, ayatanas, dhatus, dependent origination, etc., each story, is a dharma skandha, and there is no fixed number of verses. Then, why are these taught? Because in order to counteract the eighty thousand different behaviors (greed, etc.) (of sentient beings' afflictions) such as greed, hatred, ignorance, pride, views, and doubt, eighty thousand dharma skandhas (unattractiveness, love, dependent origination, division of realms, etc.) corresponding to these are also taught. The word "ni" is to exclude the aspects mentioned before, or to grasp its meaning definitively, the king's son explained. Some also explain that this latter view is the teacher's own view. Some Tibetan teachers say that there are two hundred million behaviors arising from the three afflictions such as greed and their equal degrees, and in order to counteract these, there are eighty-four thousand dharma skandhas. As it is said in the Jewel Cloud Dharani: "Eighty-four thousand in number, the Buddhas act for the benefit of beings, with various dharma doors and skillful means, they tame the world's beings as they wish." And it is also said in the Sutra Requested by Electricity. These are in terms of the common vehicle, but according to the Mahayana view, it is clear that there are more than eighty-four thousand. The teacher Dharmamitra said: "In terms of the unsurpassed vehicle, with the ink that the elephant of the king of gods, Extremely Firm, should offer, one can write a dharma skandha." If this is done, then it will be reasonable that the scriptures offered by Devadatta with five thousand elephants will be recited.

If one asks about the Dharma term called "All-Knowing Eye," (it is said that) even if one were to exhaust the amount of water in a great ocean of ink, and the amount of bamboo pens as large as Mount Sumeru, one would not be able to exhaust each chapter, each gate, each Dharma principle, and each separate explanation of the Dharma's words from that Dharma term. Furthermore, it is said in the Sutra of Repaying Kindness that Devadatta was proficient in and could recite six hundred thousand loads of incense elephant-carried sutras. If so many Dharma aggregates have been spoken of, where are they now since they are not visible in this world? Some of the Dharma friends, the teachers, practice in other world realms, and most practice in the abodes of the nagas. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "The precious Dharma is excellent and without harm, whatever pure conduct there may be, it is cherished by the nagas' crest jewels, respectfully held like the crown ornaments of the great ones, dispelling the darkness in the depths of the earth." Thus it is proclaimed. Acharya Vasubandhu said in the Commentary on the Compendium of Valid Cognition: "Because the basis of true summarization has been destroyed, it is understood that it is not all-encompassing." In the Commentary on the Vinaya Inquiry it says: "After the Teacher passed away, a Brahmin king named 勝軍 (རྒྱལ་བྱེད་བཤེས།,jayajetabhesa,胜利友) destroyed the stupas, killed the monks, and burned the scriptures and temples." Therefore, because he and the beggar Sun Accomplishment and others destroyed the basis of true summarization, most have disappeared, and even those that remain are not complete, so not all can be seen. Acharya Royal Son also said in the Ṭīkā: "Those Dharma aggregates have disappeared, only this one remains." It is also said: "The sutra that shows the complete six causes has disappeared, thus the teachings that arise from one can show up to a hundred dharmas, but now it seems that only up to ten dharmas can be shown." Secondly, applying this to other things, just as the Dharma aggregates are summarized into aggregates (and also to be summarized, how to summarize? That is, the aggregates, sources, elements, etc., as mentioned before, and their respective names.
