Because it makes it clear, it is like a touchstone. The mind is like a churn because it makes the ripening feeling manifest and gathers it closely. Because feeling benefits consciousness, consciousness is like an eater, so it is arranged in the order of containers, etc. Or, it is said that the order of the realms such as the desire realm is shown as it is, because those realms are distinguished by form, etc. For example, the desire realm is distinguished by form, because the qualities of desire are form. The form realm is distinguished by feeling, because in the first dhyana there is happiness and joy, in the second there is joy, in the third there is mental happiness, and in the fourth there is equanimity, so it is established. The first three of the formless realms are distinguished by perception, while the peak of existence is distinguished only by formation (i.e., by this, life is cast into eighty thousand kalpas). Consciousness is the basis of these, so it is shown in that order. It is explained that these also accomplish the determination of number. The order of the six sense bases (six entrances) is that because the six sense bases hold the present thing, the first five form sense bases, such as the eye, are shown first. And because the mind has objects of the three times and non-time, unconditioned, it is said later. Among these five, the eye, etc. (first) four are shown first because they are only the objects of the color of the fruit that arises from the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. And the body is the object of both, so it is said later. Among these four, the eye and ear are mentioned first because they can reach far away. The nose and tongue hold after touching, so they only touch nearby objects, so they are said later. (The first two) The eye can reach farther than the ear, so it is said first. (Also the nose and tongue) The nose touches faster than the tongue, so it is said first, and the tongue is said after it. Or, it is said according to the order of how they abide, because from the eye abiding first to the body mostly abiding below. In that case, when this explains the order of the six internal sense bases, the order of the external sense bases can also be known, because it is shown according to the order of the object-possessors.
