Vaṃ. (If it is not reasonable to enter into a treatise that does not possess necessity and has not been taught by a special teacher worthy of trust, and to compose a treatise that clarifies its meaning, then what necessity does it possess, and who was the first teacher worthy of trust to speak it?) At the beginning of composing a treatise, for what necessity was the Abhidharma spoken, and the teacher who spoke it should also be stated. Because a treatise that does not possess necessity and is not a special teacher is not something that scholars speak or listen to. Therefore, the meaning of the commentary is what necessity does it possess, and who was the special teacher who spoke it? If someone asks: Like this, should one respectfully and joyfully explain Master Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakosha? As a response to this, it is said, "Skilled in distinguishing dharmas," and so on. Here, among the three of necessity, summary, and meaning of words, first, among the three, refuting the views of other schools, the young scholar says: All treatises, or some actions, as long as the necessity is not explained, who will accept it? It means that after the realization of a valid person arises from the words explaining the necessity, one enters. This is not correct, because one only sees that words cause confusion in meaning, and one cannot understand the words of a special person, and the Vedas not made by humans are also impossible. Second, regarding one's own school, Master Śāntarakṣita believes that this treatise should not be composed, because it does not possess necessity, just like a treatise that examines the teeth of crows. In order to eliminate this wrong view, it is explained that this treatise should be composed because it possesses necessity, just like medicine. It means that in order to eliminate the wrong view that prevents the composition of the treatise, the words that explain the necessity are written. Master Dharmottara believes that because too much doubt arises about necessity, etc., in order to allow others to enter the treatise, the words that explain necessity, etc., are written. In general, even if only the words do not possess meaning, the author of the treatise should not place words that do not possess meaning at the beginning of the treatise. Master Śaṅkaranandana explains it this way.
