General Introduction to the Treatise General Introduction to the Treatise Thus, nearly a thousand years after the passing away of the Sugata, there arose a great master named Vasubandhu, who had mastered all fields of knowledge, had reached the other shore of the ocean of his own and others' doctrines, and had become the sole eye of all the Buddha's teachings. This was the one prophesied by the Buddha Bhagavan in the Mañjuśrīmūlatantra: "Thereafter, the one renowned will be a Brahmin in the southern direction, who will teach the first of letters, and he will be the chief for the Buddha's teachings." Such a great master completely compiled the meanings of the seven Abhidharma treatises, such as the Entering into Wisdom, and the Great Commentary, and after explaining in detail the established tenets of the Kashmir Vaibhāṣikas, he composed this treatise, which includes refutations, with critical remarks, of some of the views they had analyzed that did not come from scripture and reason. This also must be ascertained through three aspects: entering into the exposition, establishing the exposition, and the complete activity. First, among the three, praising and vowing to expound (also divided into two, first is praising) is "What is it?" and so forth. This also must be ascertained through three aspects: the purpose, the summary, and the meaning of the words. First, among the two, the purpose of praising is that prostrating, which precedes the praising of the qualities of the Buddha Bhagavan, has three temporary (and ultimate) purposes (among the two, first is): knowing the greatness of the teacher, increasing merit, and conforming to the conduct of the noble ones. The ultimate purpose is to attain liberation itself. Alternatively, praising the Buddha Bhagavan enables one to realize the greatness of the teacher, prostrating increases merit, and both conform to the noble ones. Knowing the greatness leads to gradually entering through hearing his teachings with respect, increasing merit leads to the completion of the composition, and entering his treatise after recognizing its holiness ultimately leads to attaining nirvāṇa, therefore it is the purpose of all (purposes).

is liberation itself. The commentary says: Those who wish to compose a treatise, in order to know the greatness of their own teacher, therefore compose a prostration that precedes the praise of his qualities. The Tika says: Composing prostrations is for the sake of increasing one's own merit. Another way of saying it is that it is for the sake of fully demonstrating the following of the conduct of the holy ones, whose conduct is to make offerings, praises, and prostrations to the gods they desire, and then to begin their work. If it is necessary to know the nature of greatness, it is in order to generate respect for it. Generating respect is also for the sake of listening to his scriptures with reverence. Listening to it with reverence is also for the sake of gradually generating the wisdom that comes from hearing, thinking, and meditating. Generating that is also for the sake of abandoning afflictions, and that is also for the sake of attaining nirvana, which is characterized by the pacification of all suffering, and the purpose is exhausted there. If one respects the Buddha's words, then respect for the treatises that rely on them will also be achieved implicitly, since they themselves explain the meaning of those words. Secondly, the necessity of vowing to explain (there are also three, this is the first) (there are two necessities, this is for oneself) is that the composition will be completed, because the holy ones do not abandon the burden of their vows. As it is said: Those who cherish others, even for the sake of their lives, do not relax their own abilities. Holy beings who bear heavy burdens never abandon them on the path of danger. Like that. (For others, it is to recognize the entrance by showing the name of the treatise.) In short, this verse shows the prostration that precedes the praise of the Buddha Bhagavan and the vow to explain. (Third) In terms of the meaning of the words (there are two, one is to identify the object of worship, which is "to whom" in "to whom"). "Who" is a general term, but (there are four reasons for making it specific: context, implication, presence or absence of connection, and combination with a qualifier, here it is) combined with a qualifier, therefore it is known to be the Buddha Bhagavan, that is, the characteristic of completely destroying the darkness of all beings, etc.
