Because it is said that for limitless beings, there exists non-afflictive ignorance. (So, what is that? It is understood through reasoning that excludes other aspects. All knowable things are definitely either conditioned or unconditioned, and conditioned things are definitely either undefiled or defiled. Unconditioned things and undefiled conditioned things do not cause blindness and are antidotes, therefore they do not possess the function and characteristics of darkness, so they are not darkness. Among defiled things, afflictive ones are the very first darkness, therefore non-afflictive ones are the distinctions of defiled virtuous things and un-obscured and unspecified things, like the four causes of ignorance that will be discussed below.) Among them, not knowing the Buddha's teachings, as (it is said in the sutra:) the Teacher said to the Venerable Shariputra: (Shariputra,) do you know the aggregates of the Tathagata's discipline, etc.? He replied: I do not know. etc. Not knowing the eons of places, like the Venerable Maudgalyayana not knowing that his mother was born in the realm of the Radiant Gods. Not knowing the eons of time, like the Noble Shariputra not knowing that the householder Shri Jata had previously generated a share of liberation. Limitless distinctions of meaning are the distinctions that are difficult to understand, such as realms, destinies, birthplaces, and births. Not knowing these is like not knowing the causes of the various colors of peacock feathers, etc. As the Venerable Rahula said: Although the peacock's feathers are only one, all the forms of causes are not knowable by anyone other than the omniscient one, knowing it is the power of the omniscient one. Therefore, it must be determined that these four kinds of ignorance are the obscurations of knowledge (non-afflictive darkness). (The definition is that it makes one blind like a blind person, so it is darkness. The commentary says that ignorance is darkness because it is an obstacle to seeing the true meaning. Also, as it is said in the commentary on the Garland of Birth Stories: Just as darkness obstructs the ability to see things in the world, so too is ignorance, it is said to be an obstacle to seeing (the truth).)

Darkness refers to ignorance, unawareness, delusion, and so on. Although there are other things to be abandoned, only darkness is mentioned here because it is the main thing to be abandoned and because it is the direct opposite of perfect wisdom, as explained by the teacher Kamarupa. Secondly, the way to overcome it is that the perfect Buddha, having attained the wisdom that is the antidote, has completely overcome and abandoned those darknesses, together with their imprints, so that they never arise again in relation to all knowable objects. Completely overcoming means that by attaining the antidote, it is made into a nature that will never arise again. This shows the distinction in abandonment from that of the Shravakas and others. Because they only have the abandonment of the afflictive (darkness of affliction) obscurations, (because they have not abandoned the imprints,) there is a possibility of degeneration, and the (non-afflictive) obscurations of knowledge are not abandoned in any way. (Therefore, in the commentary it says: Self-Buddhas and Shravakas also, because they are free from the delusion of affliction, are considered to have overcome darkness in all respects, but not completely. For example, they have non-afflictive ignorance regarding the Dharma of the Buddha, places, time, extremely long kalpas, and the infinite number of things that are greatly differentiated in meaning. This is said, and these have already been explained.) If that is the case, then those Shravakas and others would not be the enders of suffering. The sutra says: Monks, I do not say that one can end suffering without directly knowing and fully understanding one dharma. Another sutra also says: I do not say that one can end suffering without fully understanding and abandoning one dharma. If you ask this, it is not so. They have abandoned the essence of the afflictive obscurations, and they have abandoned the obscurations of knowledge in a way that is free from desire and attachment. The sutra says: Monks, abandon whatever desire and attachment you have for the eye, and then you will have abandoned the eye. Like that. Therefore, those obscurations are only abandoned, but not completely abandoned, because complete abandonment refers to making it a nature that never arises, but for the Shravakas and others, those obscurations arise again and again.
