Be sure to understand the meaning of these words. Then, while the breath has not yet completely ceased, although it is said that the posture of the corpse should be either sitting cross-legged or lying on the right side, if the posture can be adjusted while the breath has not ceased, that is fine, but once the breath has ceased, the corpse should not be touched for adjustment. There should be no sounds of wailing or clamor nearby, to avoid negative influences, and peace and tranquility should be maintained. Do not allow those who have broken vows or are sinful to be near the corpse, especially avoid relying on (the deceased's) relatives and friends who were cherished from the depths of their hearts during their lifetime, and they should not cry or shout loudly. Be sure to merge the easily memorable instructions into the mind at the time of death. If the Lama, without being greedy for wealth, performs Phowa (transference of consciousness) with compassion, the benefits are inconceivable. First, recite the Refuge and Bodhicitta, and proclaim as many names of the Buddha as possible. The body's heat gradually contracts from the extremities, and when the pulse above the knees stops beating, and is close to the pulse in the neck stopping, (the Lama) sits facing the head of the deceased, and from the hairline upwards eight finger-widths, that is, the very center of the crown of the head, a portion of the hair is twisted tightly and pulled upwards. In a voice that is neither too loud nor too soft, appropriately call out his name: 'Oh, son or daughter of so-and-so, you are now facing the moment of death when body and mind separate, so recognize this death. Whatever you have in this life, whether it be body, house, property, possessions, friends, relatives, business, actions, etc., do not have any attachment or clinging. If you develop attachment and clinging to these, they will only become obstacles and hindrances on the path to liberation, and there will be no benefit whatsoever. Let go with an open mind, and cut off completely. This impermanent death is not happening to you alone. From the universal monarch who rules the four continents down to the infant born yesterday, death is inevitable, so do not feel fear or suffering about this. To be able to encounter the Lama and such profound teachings at the time of death is a blessing and fortunate circumstance.' Do not let the mind wander elsewhere, but with a joyful mind, contemplate in this way: Your own body is the form of the supreme Vajrayogini, and within your body, there is flesh, blood, bones, internal organs, etc.
