Born from the lotus. May I be reborn in Sukhavati! Om Peme Peme. (Tibetan: པདྨ་ལས་བྱུང་བ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: padma sambhava, Sanskrit Romanization: padma sambhava, Literal Chinese Meaning: Born from the lotus) Peme Peme Sambhave. (Tibetan: ཆེན་པོ་བདེ་བ་ཅན་དུ་སོང་ཞིག་, Sanskrit Devanagari: mahā sukha, Sanskrit Romanization: mahā sukha, Literal Chinese Meaning: Great Bliss) Maha Sukha. (Tibetan: འདི་ན་མི་སྣང་བདེ་བ་ཅན་དུ་སོང་དུ་གསོལ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: vati gacchantu svāhā, Sanskrit Romanization: vati gacchantu svāhā, Literal Chinese Meaning: May it swiftly go to Sukhavati) Vati Gacchantu Svaha! Thus say. The Profound Path of Phowa's Key Instruction. When passing from this world to the next, for the deceased so-and-so, now there is no need to meditate, but rather, among the six dharmas of becoming a Buddha. The extraordinary key instruction for the extremely sinful to forcibly attain Buddhahood, and for the lazy to be liberated at the time of death, is the profound dharma of liberation through the upper gate. Now is the time to bestow the key instruction of the profound path of Phowa. This has four general meanings: the reason for needing Phowa, the benefit of where to be reborn, the faults of not doing Phowa, and how to actually perform the nature of Phowa. First, the necessary reason for Phowa is: Master Padmasambhava said: The nine doors are the windows of samsara, one door is the path to liberation and enlightenment. Close the nine doors and open one door, transfer the consciousness there, and one will far surpass the six realms of samsara, and attain supreme accomplishment. Thus it is. Second, the benefit of where to be reborn is: In the Dakini Kun Tu Togpai Gyud it says: Consciousness rides on the wind, and if transferred to the upper path, even a person accustomed to sin, will be reborn many times in the higher realms. Just like a guest walking on the road, being taken away by a friend. Thus it is. Also, in the Four Session Tantra of Vajra Seat it says: Above the nine orifices, immediately transfer with intention, even if one kills a Brahmin every day, commits the five heinous crimes, and enjoys thievery, one can be liberated through this path, and will not be stained by sin. Thus it is. When stained by all faults, one is liberated by applying the practice of Phowa. One will not be stained by sin, and will transcend samsara to reach the supreme place. Thus it is. Furthermore, as it is said: All virtuous deeds are like a bow, the impact of Phowa is like an arrow. Thus it is. Third, the faults of not doing Phowa are: As it is said: Consciousness takes the wind as a horse, if one goes to the lower path, even a person accustomed to Dharma, will fall into the lower realms many times. Thus it is. Fourth, how to actually perform the nature of Phowa

Ulla! The rituals of the new and old schools, the upper and lower tantras, and the Karma, Terma, and Pure Vision traditions, respectively, include the transference of outer compounded substances, the transference of inner generation stage visualization, the transference based on the union of secret wind-mind, the transference of suchness, the meaning of reality, the transference of the Dharmakaya, the expansion of view, the transference of the Sambhogakaya, the union of generation and completion, and the activities of the Nirmanakaya, the transference of immeasurable compassion, etc., as well as the methods of transference with and without support in the generation and completion stages, etc. However, on this occasion, for the sake of Minister Nyima of Dharma King Trisong Detsen, the Great Orgyen requested from Buddha Amitabha and gave it to the minister, burying it as a treasure. Later, Nyida Sangye extracted it from the treasure and propagated it in succession. The profound path of transference, the instruction called "Jag Tsugma," is now the time to clarify this transference of inner generation stage visualization. There are three aspects to this: what is transferred, the agent of transference, and the place of transference. First, what is transferred is: the nature of your own consciousness at this moment, the various plans of thoughts, happiness, and suffering, which cannot remain still for even a moment. The agent of transference is that we, the teachers, bestow the profound instruction of the profound path of transference with the nature of emptiness and union. The place of transference is: the heart of Buddha Amitabha, the lord of the Western Pure Land of Sukhavati, to whom you must direct your aspiration with single-pointed focus. For this purpose, offer all that you hold dear, such as land, places, dwellings, houses, relatives, retinues, servants, food, wealth, possessions, and your cherished body, in the form of a mandala to the lama and Buddha Amitabha and his retinue. Completely sever all attachment and clinging to the objects of your previous life's enjoyment. Without being distracted by other thoughts, you must have eight kinds of awareness: First, regard your own body as a borrowed house. Regard consciousness as a guest who is about to depart. Regard the wind as the horse or ox that you ride. Regard the central channel as the path you travel. Regard the crown aperture as the door. HIK (Tibetan: ཧིཀ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हिक्, Sanskrit Romanization: hik, Chinese literal meaning: HIK) is the escort.
