They eat the falling sand. According to the commentary, it seems to be like that, but in some places, the saying "flour" appears, which is clearly incorrect. According to the Lamrim Chenmo, it seems to mean "to do." Some lower-class pretas who have not accumulated merit cannot find good food, let alone bad things like pus and feces, blood, etc. So what do they eat? Because of their anger, they beat each other's faces, and because of this, abscesses grow in their throats, and they eat the pus that matures inside. Some pretas experience spring and autumn, this spring. In the summer, the moonlight makes them hot, and in the winter, the sunlight makes them suffer from the cold, which is due to the power of karma. Because of the power of their evil deeds, when they look at fruit-bearing trees, the fruits of those trees disappear, that is, even if they generally exist, their eyes cannot see them, and these pretas. Just by looking at rivers like the Ganges, even great rivers appear to dry up. So, is their suffering short-lived? No, they endure suffering without interruption. Here, some places say "rely on," which is incorrect, it means to suffer. The ropes of evil karma that bind those pretas because of their bad deeds are very strong, and some pretas do not die even after five thousand years, and some do not die even after tens of thousands of years. As mentioned earlier, pretas suffer from various kinds of suffering such as hunger and thirst, and here some people interpret it as "the same taste," which is meaningless. The same taste, that is, the suffering that is obtained without interruption. The cause of that suffering is that people are stingy, very greedy for wealth, and like to accumulate. The Buddha said that a greedy person, a person who uses the wealth of pretas, is not a noble person, but an evil person. Although the Buddha said that it is proper for householders to accumulate wealth, it will become like that because of greed, and those who are ordained, if they are attached to wealth and bound by greed, I am afraid it will be even more serious. Not only the three lower realms, but also the high heavens.

Even though there is great pleasure in the heavens, the suffering of death and falling of those gods is greater than the previous pleasure. Having thought in this way, good and virtuous people do not crave or cling to the happiness of the heavens, which will eventually be exhausted. What is the suffering of death and falling? When a desire god dies, first the color of the body becomes ugly, one dislikes one's seat, the decorative flowers and garlands become old, one's clothes become stained, and on one's body appear dust and unpleasant odors that were not there before. These are called the five omens of the death and falling of desire gods in the heavens. These omens appear to the gods in the heavens, just like the omens of death that appear to some people on earth. After dying and falling from the heavens, if there is no remaining merit from previous accumulations, one will fall and involuntarily be reborn as an animal, a hungry ghost, or in any of the hells. Not only in the heavens, but also in the abodes of the Asuras, because of their innate arrogance and jealousy of the enjoyment and wealth of the gods, they harbor hatred, and therefore their inner suffering is great. Even if there are intelligent ones among those Asuras, due to the karmic obscuration of being jealous, they cannot directly see the true nature of reality in that life. Samsara is as described before, so do not be reborn among the Asuras, hells, animals, and hungry ghosts. Because being reborn there is not good, know that being reborn there is a vessel full of various harms. Therefore, if one's head or the clothes on one's body suddenly catch fire, those fires, according to the explanation here, seem to have the meaning of returning. In order to return, that is, in order to extinguish the flames, even if one has to temporarily abandon what one is doing, one should strive to be free from rebirth. Because there is no need more important than this. That is to say, without regard for body and life, one should strive to attain liberation. O King, you should protect the precepts.
