A commentary clarifying the meaning of the "Friendly Epistle". A commentary clarifying the meaning of the "Friendly Epistle". A commentary clarifying the meaning of the "Friendly Epistle" is present. I prostrate to and take refuge in the feet of the Protector Nāgārjuna! In India, there are four languages, of which in Sanskrit it is: Sūtridale-kha. When translated into Tibetan, Sūtrida means "friend" and Lekha means "letter". Because it is free from the coarse touch of afflictions, it is timid; because it possesses the splendor of all qualities, it is glorious; because it abides in the state of being like the age of sixteen, it is youthful. To prostrate to that is to respectfully bow. To King Dechö (Pleasant Conduct), this explanation of qualities is one way of explaining the actual virtue in the commentary. You, who are naturally virtuous, that is, fit to be a vessel of virtue, I, Nāgārjuna. Having abandoned self-creation, these sacred verses, which are spoken from the Sugata's teachings, that is, from the merit and virtue arising from explanation, for the sake of desiring, that is, believing. Without elaborating extensively, I will compose a little, that is, speak concisely, and you, the king, should listen. If you wonder if there is something that should not be listened to, like, what need is there to mention a precious statue of the Sugata, even if it is made of wood or stone, etc.? Whatever good or bad it may be, just as the wise should make offerings. Similarly, my poetry, that is, these words, even if the composition, etc., is bad. Because what is said relies on the talk of speaking the sacred Dharma, you should not criticize it. If you think, "I know a lot, so I won't listen," then the words of the Great Sage Buddha are pleasing, that is, well-spoken in nine ways, that is, many. Even though you may have previously examined it in your mind through hearing and thinking, still. However, listening is beneficial, for example, a house plastered with white lime, like one made of lime, according to the explanation, like one that is naturally white, when it is struck by the moonlight at night, why would it not become even whiter than before? Just as it would become whiter, it will become more beneficial. The Victorious One, that is, victorious over all opposing forces.

By that Buddha, remembering the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as giving, upholding morality, and remembering the causes of taking birth in the six desire realms, altogether six recollections. These six recollections spoken of in the scriptures, each individually, are to be remembered through the gateway of the accumulation of merit. The way of remembering is like contemplating the arising of enjoyment from generosity. These ten virtuous paths of action, such as abandoning killing, you, that is, the three actions of body, the four of speech, the three of speech and mind, body and speech and mind should always, that is, continuously cultivate. Grains and other alcoholic beverages should be abstained from, that is, not consumed, and likewise, one should rejoice in virtuous actions that do not harm others. Knowing that conditioned enjoyments are wavering, that is, they are perishable and without essence, in order to obtain essence, to the Sangha, represented by the basis of merit, the ordained and Brahmins, and to the pitiable, the poor who lack food and clothing, and to the basis of kindness, parents and other friends, one should mainly give material generosity in accordance with the Dharma, that is, one should give, because in future lives, there is no better beneficial relative or friend than generosity. King, you protect the four root vows, and although the precepts are not broken, 'not inferior' means without fault, as stated in the commentary. Not mixed with non-virtue, and not defiled by the stain of wrong aspiration, if those who desire liberation dedicate virtue for the sake of the status of gods and humans and for enjoyment, it is called wrong dedication, therefore do not be tainted, do not be defiled, but cultivate it in your own mindstream. The reason is that morality, like the basis and foundation for the growth of sentient and non-sentient things is the earth, is the basis and support for all qualities such as meditative concentration. For the generosity of Dharma and wealth, and for the morality of individual liberation, for patience such as not minding harm, and for diligence in rejoicing in virtue, and for meditative concentration without distraction from the object, likewise, for ultimate truth and
