If sentient beings and beings of the hungry ghost realm involuntarily suffer and experience many torments of the world of Yama due to attachment to desirable qualities, then why should I not endure for the sake of enlightenment of the Buddha? It is appropriate to cultivate patience. How to endure? If iron rods, weapons, killings, bindings, beatings, and cutting off heads, ears, noses, feet, hands, etc., and all the sufferings of the world come upon me, I will endure them. Such a Bodhisattva abides in the supreme perfection of patience. Next is the perfection of discipline. Discipline makes those who desire peace and Nirvana more sublime, and abiding in the practice of following the ten-powered Buddha—the supreme training, protecting the four root vows without deterioration, and following all actions that prevent transgressions. The virtue of doing so should also be dedicated to enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. If a Bodhisattva wants to attain the enlightenment of a Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, or Arhat, then he becomes unskilled and violates the vows of a Bodhisattva, and such conduct also deteriorates. If one does not seek peace and happiness for oneself alone, but completely dedicates the virtue to the Buddha's enlightenment, peaceful Nirvana, then even if the Bodhisattva strives to enjoy the five desirable qualities, he abides in the supreme perfection of the Bodhisattva's discipline. Whatever virtuous Dharma is practiced, it will surely benefit oneself and others, and it will accomplish the qualities of enlightenment. This is the meaning of Bodhisattvas who possess the Dharma of altruistic qualities guarding their vows. Whatever non-virtuous Dharma is practiced, it will cause Bodhisattvas who benefit beings to completely fall away from the supreme enlightenment. This is the violation of vows by a Bodhisattva, as the guide, the Buddha, said. In general, the discipline pursued by Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas for their own enlightenment is pure relative to those they guide, but if a Bodhisattva also pursues this discipline, it becomes a violation of vows.

Oh, there is a difference! If a Bodhisattva enjoys the five desirable qualities, but also takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, thinking that he must achieve Buddhahood, and seeks omniscience in his mind, then, that wise Bodhisattva should know that he abides in the perfection of discipline. Generally speaking, if one is attached to the five desirable qualities and enjoys them, and places them on the path of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, the fault is great. However, the Bodhisattva who accomplishes the benefit of others enjoys the five desirable qualities, and it is contemplated that it will be transformed into merit. If one practices the ten virtuous paths, such as abandoning killing, for countless eons, but generates the desire to attain the Arhatship of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, then, at that time, the Bodhisattva's discipline will have the fault of defeat, and the discipline will be broken. The Bodhisattva's generation of the mind that seeks the Bodhi of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers is a more serious fault than the four root downfalls of a Bhikshu. Protect the discipline and completely dedicate the merit to the supreme Buddhahood. Through the gateway of protecting the discipline, there is no arrogant pride, and one does not engage in self-praise and disparagement of others. If one completely abandons the thought of "I" or "mine," and the thought of beings that distinguishes others or sentient beings with true attachment, then it is said that the Bodhisattva abides in the perfection of discipline. If a Bodhisattva practices the path of the Victorious Ones, and various thoughts of true attachment arise in his mind, thinking that these sentient beings possess discipline, and these sentient beings are breakers of discipline, then, at that time, he himself is breaking the discipline of the Bodhisattva, the discipline is broken, and that Bodhisattva does not have the completely pure Bodhisattva discipline. Moreover, generally speaking, for pure Bhikshus, there will arise true attachment to the three wheels of discipline, and merely by that, one will not become a breaker of discipline. However, if one does not uproot the object of attachment to true attachment, and is controlled by true attachment, one will not become a Bodhisattva of ultimate reality, therefore it is contemplated that the fault is great, and it is also explained in the root commentary of the "Entering the Middle Way." For the Bodhisattva of ultimate reality, there is no manifestation of the thought of "mine" and the thought of true attachment to sentient beings, therefore he is free from attachment to true thoughts.
