Since there is no attachment or hatred towards it, how can there be non-restraint and non-virtue? For a Bodhisattva, there is no arrogance of clinging to the truth of both restraint and non-restraint. This is what the Buddha said to be the discipline of the Bodhisattva's morality. The perfection of generosity is that a particularly pure being who possesses such morality does not have the view of attachment to all desirable and undesirable objects of samsara. Giving away one's head, limbs, etc., to others, there is no shrinking mind, giving away all possessions, and constantly without attachment. The nature of all things to be given, etc., is that they are selfless without inherent existence. Knowing that all contaminated things are impermanent, false, and without essence, even if one gives away the flesh of one's own body to others without shrinking, then what need is there to mention giving away external things to others at that time? If it is possible to have strong stinginess towards giving alms, that is impossible. For those who cling tightly to the consciousness that they are truly existent, and to the consciousness that things belong to them, how can there be the intention to give alms? There is none. In that way, because they do not understand the ripening of generosity, those great misers who cling tightly to things will be reborn in the realm of the pretas in the future. If they are born as humans, they will be born into poor families at that time. At the time of giving alms, when a Bodhisattva sees poor sentient beings, he thinks: Alas, these poor sentient beings are because they did not give alms and were stingy towards giving alms. Therefore, one becomes fond of giving, and always gives more. This four continents are well decorated with ornaments, like dust from spit, meaningless and unnecessary. If this is one's own, one will be happy when giving it to others. If one obtains these four continents, there will not be such great joy. When wise and intelligent Bodhisattvas give alms, they think: May this alms be given to all sentient beings in the three realms. Thinking in this way, they give alms, and that virtue also

For the benefit of all beings, I dedicate the merit to the supreme and perfect enlightenment of the Buddha. After giving, there is no clinging to the reality of the three circles—who is the object of giving, who is the giver, and for whose benefit the giving is done. Moreover, there is no giving with the expectation of great enjoyment as the result of one's own giving. Therefore, those skilled in giving give all things, great and small. Even a small giving, through the power of special skillful means and dedication, will bring about immeasurable benefits and merits. All sentient beings in the three realms, as many as there are, should be regarded as objects of giving. If all these beings were to give to the World-Knower Buddha, the Hearer Arhats, and the Solitary Realizers for endless eons, seeking the states of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, it would be very beneficial. However, if any Bodhisattva skilled in means rejoices in their objects of merit and completely dedicates the virtue to the enlightenment of all beings, then that virtue of dedication will surpass all previous merits and the merits of giving of all other beings. For example, even if there is a great heap of coral, because its use is not great, a single precious lapis lazuli can surpass all the coral. Similarly, all the vast accumulation of the merit of giving of all beings, if one rejoices in them and dedicates them to the enlightenment of the Buddha, then the virtue of the Bodhisattva's dedication will surpass them. If a Bodhisattva gives to beings and does not cling to the idea that "This was given by me," and does not begrudge the object given, then from that way, the roots of virtue will greatly increase. For example, just as one sees the waxing orb of the moon increasing in the sky when there are no clouds. In general, there are two types of giving: the giving of Dharma and the giving of material things. For renunciants, the giving of Dharma is more important; for householders, the giving of material things is more important. And the giving of material things is divided into offering to the Three Jewels above and below.
