They do not manifest or touch the ultimate boundary of true cessation, nor do they use it as a sign of clinging to reality. Furthermore, just as a person well-trained in archery shoots an arrow upwards into the sky, and other arrows are shot in succession following the previous arrow, thus connecting them. Therefore, when the previous arrow falls to the ground, it cannot be found, but remains in the sky and does not fall to the ground. If that person wishes, the arrow will fall to the ground. However, regarding the meaning of "connecting them," some say that the later arrow connects to the space of the earlier arrow, but no source is seen for this. Similarly, bodhisattvas who practice the supreme perfection of wisdom, practicing with wisdom, skillful means, power, and miraculous abilities, do not attain and manifest the ultimate boundary, emptiness or nirvana, until the roots of virtue are perfected. This implicitly suggests that after the roots of virtue are perfected, it will be manifested. Furthermore, just as a monk with supreme miraculous power dwells in the sky, and at once emanates various miraculous displays, showing the four modes of conduct of walking, standing, lying down, and sitting, yet the one who shows thus does not feel weary, nor does he feel tired. Just like that example, a skilled bodhisattva who has attained a pure land abides in the samadhi of emptiness, and for one who has reached the other shore of wisdom and miraculous powers, without effort or fatigue, he shows limitless forms of emanation activities for beings, and not just for a short time, but for countless eons, without becoming weary or tired of benefiting others. Furthermore, just as some people stand on the edge of a great cliff, holding two umbrellas in their hands, and jump into the sky of the cliff, even though the body falls from the great cliff, due to the force of the wind lifting the second umbrella, the danger of the body falling into the cliff will not arise, but they will go to the place they desire. Similarly, a skilled bodhisattva abides in great compassion, fully holding the two umbrellas of skillful means and wisdom, and understands that the nature of all phenomena is emptiness.

oneself, and even though one contemplates and examines without cause and without wishing for results, one does not touch Nirvana at the wrong time, and one also sees the ultimate Dharma. Again, for example, a captain who desires jewels goes to the island of jewels, obtains jewels, and then returns to his own home. But at that time, the captain only wants to live happily and comfortably himself, and does not want to make his relatives and friends feel unhappy. Similarly, because a Bodhisattva is the source of the precious qualities, he goes to the island of the precious emptiness and obtains the four meditations, the five faculties, and strength, etc. This is touching the true end of Nirvana, that is, only manifesting joy and not leaving the suffering of sentient beings in mind. In this example, the phrases "only lives happily" and in the meaning "touching only manifests joy" should be connected to the following words, not according to the literal meaning. Again, for example, a merchant who takes jewels from the ocean and engages in business for profit goes to cities, towns, and villages in order to understand the value of the goods. He does not always stay there, nor does he always stay on the island of jewels. A person skilled in business acumen does not always stay in his own home, but is skilled in the affairs of the road. Similarly, a wise Bodhisattva is skilled in all the wisdom and liberation of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, but does not dwell in these states, nor does he dwell in the wisdom of the Buddha. He is not attracted by the unconditioned, true peace, but by understanding the ways of the three vehicles, he does not dwell anywhere. Thus, the measure of whether or not the true realm is manifested is this: When a Bodhisattva who is skilled in the practice of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, with a mind of love for all beings, acts for the benefit of sentient beings in name, but from a rational point of view, these sentient beings have actually attained Nirvana.
