If one knows that it is merely nominal, then even if those dharmas are named for many billions of kalpas, one knows that in the ultimate sense, the realm of dharma, which is empty of truth, has neither exhaustion nor increase. Whatever dharmas are called the perfections of the Buddhas are also empty of inherent existence, and are only proclaimed and taught as mere designations by name. From where is it taught? From the extensive and intermediate Prajnaparamita sutras, it is said that form is only a name, feeling is only a name, and so on. Thus, the bodhisattva who dedicates the root of virtue of practicing the Prajnaparamita entirely to the state of Buddhahood, and who is without the arrogance of clinging to reality, will not have the degeneration of falling into the vehicle of hearers and solitary realizers, and will attain the supreme enlightenment of Buddhahood. If it is not truly existent, how is enlightenment attained? For example, when the wick of an oil lamp is burned, the wick is not burned up by the first moment that the flame touches the wick. However, without the first flame, the wick will not be completely burned. The wick is not burned up by just the last moment that the wick touches the flame. Even without that last flame, the wick is not burned up, but because of the continuous and interdependent causes, the wick is completely burned. Similarly, the supreme enlightenment of Buddhahood cannot be touched or attained by just the first moment of the two minds of enlightenment. Without that first mind, one cannot touch enlightenment. One cannot attain that peaceful enlightenment with just the mind of the last moment. Even without that last one, enlightenment cannot be attained, but through the interdependent origination of continuity and dependence, enlightenment will be attained. Again, for example, sprouts, flowers, and fruits arise from seeds. Just as the previous seeds and so on have ceased, but the later fruits, trees, and so on are not non-existent, so too, the first mind is the cause of enlightenment, but even though that mind has ceased, the later fruit of enlightenment is not non-existent. Again, for example, when one obtains seeds of barley, etc., and plants them, fruits such as grain and rice arise, but the fruits of those seeds are not the seeds.

These are not inherently existent, nor are they impossible to occur. For example, the enlightenment of the Buddhas is not inherently existent in its own causes, but it occurs through dependent origination, which makes it possible. At that time, since the nature of the cause and condition that does not inherently arise disappears, it arises like an illusion from the collection of dependent origination. Again, just as drops of water are poured into a vase, gradually adding small amounts from the first drop to the last, until the vase is completely filled. Similarly, the minds that gradually arise and increase from the initial mind are also the cause of supreme enlightenment. From this, a Buddha who perfects all white qualities is gradually accomplished. These signs of the three, union, seeing, and meditation, are explained in the Ornament of Clear Realization, starting from the "Definite Emergence Limb," etc. These examples are not only important here, but I also think it is important to apply them to other aspects and understand them, so I have listed them separately. Then, regarding the union of samsara and nirvana as equal, it is explained through two verses such as "emptiness without characteristics." Practicing in the Dharma of understanding the gate of liberation—emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, that is, the Prajñāpāramitā, with compassion not touching the edge of peace, that is, not manifesting nirvana, and with wisdom not dwelling on the edge of existence, that is, not clinging to the mark of truth. For example, a skilled swimmer swims back and forth in the ocean, but does not stay on either shore of the ocean, nor does he always stay in the ocean. Similarly, even if a bodhisattva who practices in this way is actually prophesied, he does not think, "I have been prophesied to enlightenment by the Buddha with the ten powers, and now I will touch enlightenment, that is, attain enlightenment," and does not have the arrogance of clinging to reality. For this Dharma, nothing is considered to be truly established, so there is no fear of attaining enlightenment. Practicing in this way is practicing the Prajñāpāramitā of the Sugatas. This is explained in the Ornament of Clear Realization, starting from "Because all dharmas are like dreams," etc. End.
