So, how should one proceed before the actual practice? First, there are six preliminary practices: clean the room, arrange the supports for body, speech, and mind, set out offerings, sit in the lotus position on a cushion, and generate refuge, bodhicitta, etc., ensuring they blend with one's mind. According to current practice, one may invite all the fields of merit and visualize them residing in the sky in front. However, according to the actual intent of this Lamrim, one should visualize in the sky in front the lineage lamas of the vast conduct and profound view, as well as countless Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Dharma protectors. As stated in the "King of Prayers, the Noble Excellent Conduct," one should perform the seven-branch practice. Among the seven branches, prostration, offering, requesting, exhorting, and rejoicing are the branches for accumulating conducive conditions and merit, confession is the branch for purifying adverse conditions and obscurations, and dedication is the branch for ensuring that these merits are inexhaustible. Then, offer a mandala. Although it is not explicitly stated here, as mentioned elsewhere, it is good to recite the Lamrim prayer, whether in its extensive or concise form. In particular, one should strongly pray that all distorted thoughts, such as disrespect for the spiritual friend, cease, and that all non-distorted thoughts, such as respect, arise in one's mindstream. Second, how should one proceed during the actual practice session? This is divided into two points: the general way of practicing and the way of practicing in this context. The first point is: first, determine the number and order of the objects to be cultivated, and then make a firm resolution not to deviate from what has been determined. One should cultivate what has been determined with mindfulness and awareness; if one cultivates whatever comes to mind, it will be difficult to grasp the essential points. The second point is: the way of practicing in this context is to contemplate the benefits of relying on a spiritual friend and the faults of not relying on one, and then contemplate the kindness of the spiritual friend towards oneself, generating great respect from the depths of one's heart. Third, at the end, one should recite special dedication and aspiration prayers. In this way, one should engage in four sessions of practice, etc., avoiding both excessive strictness and excessive laxity; maintaining a moderate balance is very important. Furthermore, during the breaks between sessions, there are generally many things to do, but in this context, it is important to study these texts, the generation stage, and the completion stage.

It is said to strive in the matter of accumulating merit and purifying obscurations. At this time, regarding guarding the gates of the senses, acting with mindfulness, knowing the measure of food, not sleeping, and how to act when sleeping, if explained in detail it would become extensive, but if summarized, what is guarded are the six senses from the eye to the mind. The method of guarding them is to know the Dharma of guarding the gates of the senses, and to remember and protect them without forgetting. From what is guarded? Guard from the defiled and unpleasant objects. How to guard? For the six consciousnesses that arise depending on the object and the senses, before them, one must strive to prevent the mind consciousness from generating attachment and aversion to the six objects of form, sound, etc., that are pleasant and unpleasant. That is, for those objects that cause afflictions when viewed and heard, etc., do not indulge the senses, but prevent them. At this time, abandon attachment to objects that should not be viewed and view them, and grasp the signs in the mind, abandon the mind's grasping of objects that give rise to attachment and aversion, and grasping them as manifestations of discrimination after hearing them.
