It explains the reasoning for preventing the four extremes of arising. That is, it prevents arising from the four extremes of self, other, both self and other, and neither self nor other (without a cause). Among these four, regarding the reasoning for refuting arising from self by way of consequentialism, if summarized, arising from the same nature of cause and effect is self-arising, so the way to refute it is: a sprout should not arise from a seed that has the same nature as itself, because arising would become meaningless. Because arising is for the purpose of obtaining the nature of where it arises, and the sprout has already obtained its own nature, so it does not need to arise again. If a seed that has already arisen arises again, then it needs to arise repeatedly, so it must arise endlessly, which is unreasonable. If it is thought that even if it does not arise from self, it arises from other, that is also unreasonable. The idea of arising from other refers to wanting to arise from a seed with a different nature. Because it does not arise from a different seed that is unrelated in nature. If it arises, then there would be the fault of darkness arising from flames, and all effects and non-effects would arise from all causes and non-causes, because for things established by their own nature, it is not possible to determine that cause and effect are distinct. If it is thought that it does not arise from either self or other individually, but arises from the collection of both self and other, for example, a clay pot arises from clay, so it arises from self, and it also arises from potters and so on, so it arises from other. This is also unreasonable, because the same reasoning that previously refuted arising from either self or other individually can also refute this. If it is thought that it is not like the previous three cases, but arises from no cause, and also it has not been seen that the sharpness of thorns, the roundness of beans, the lotus and the colors of peacock feathers, etc., are caused by other factors, so it arises from causeless nature. This is very unreasonable, because if this were the case, all the efforts in the world to desire various kinds of effects and thus strive to accumulate various kinds of causes would become meaningless. The sharpness of thorns, etc., are not without cause, because as it is said in the scriptures: When this exists, that arises; this is called a cause. As it is said, the transformation of the previous seed is the cause of the later effect, and peacock feathers, etc., are also the seed of the cause.

Because the previous karma has not changed, and it is produced by the unique karma of sentient beings themselves. Otherwise, all crows, etc., would have peacock feathers. These are summaries of the meaning here, and like this, relying on negating the four extremes of arising, one can ascertain that things do not arise by their own nature. As it is said in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Because arising from self, other, or both, and not depending on causes, do not exist, things are devoid of inherent existence." Also, as it is said in the "Root Wisdom": "Whatever is dependently arisen, that is inherently peaceful." And as it is said in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Therefore, this reasoning of dependent arising cuts through all nets of wrong views." Thus, if one can ascertain that arising, etc., are without inherent existence by relying on the reasoning of dependent origination, that is excellent. Taking a sprout as an example, a sprout is not established by itself with its own nature, because it arises depending on its own causes and conditions. For example, like an image, this is to be understood by the inference of common agreement. That is, for the appearance of a facial image, a small child will grasp it as true according to how it appears, and will not grasp it as merely a false appearance that appears in the mind. But those who understand the meaning of words know that that appearance is not established as it appears, so they will grasp it as merely a false appearance. Similarly, these phenomena that appear to self and others are merely established by the power of appearing in the mind. If one does not ascertain it in this way, but instead grasps that they exist on the object in an autonomous manner from the aspect of their own essence, that is the way of imputing inherent existence. And this is refuted by the reasoning of dependent origination. As it is said in the "Four Hundred Verses": "Whatever arises in dependence, that is not autonomous or unchanging. All of these are without autonomy, therefore the self (inherent existence) does not exist." Because if it were established autonomously, it would have to arise without depending on causes and conditions, but because it depends on other causes and conditions, one should meditate that there is no self established autonomously. As it is said in the sutra: "Whatever depends on conditions, that is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness, that is mindful." Third, the way to abandon obscurations by familiarizing oneself with those views is: Like this, by understanding and familiarizing oneself with the meaning of selflessness, one can gradually abandon the habitual patterns of grasping at a self.
