Firstly, if the self, established by its own nature, arises and ceases in an instant, then the previous and subsequent selves become unrelated, and therefore one would not remember "my previous life was this"; just as Devadatta does not remember taking the rebirth of offering sacrifices and giving alms. Secondly, there would be the fault of wasting what has been done, because the agent and the action both perish while being established by their own characteristics, then the fruits of the previously accumulated actions will not be experienced; because both perish separately without any connection. In general, even if both the agent and the action perish, it is not contradictory to produce results, and if it is established by its own nature, it cannot be relied upon, so after it has perished, it cannot produce results later, which is reasonable, but it is a difficult place to understand. Thirdly, there is the fault of encountering what has not been done, which is also because, if a person established by his own nature accumulates karma, and then he himself perishes, and later it is thought that another person established by his own nature will experience the result of that karma, then it will become enjoying the results accumulated by others. If it is thought that the former and latter are the same continuum, then there is no such fault, which is unreasonable, because if it is established by its own nature, it must become a different continuum, so it cannot be the same continuum; as it is said in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Those who are separate by their own nature, it is not reasonable that they belong to the same continuum." This is also the reason why one cannot rely on what is established by its own nature. In short, for the view that the self and the aggregates are one, there are many obstacles that hinder the establishment of all actions and agents, so I will omit them here. Secondly, refuting the view of otherness: In general, the self and the aggregates are the same entity but only different in aspect, so it is not just refuting the difference, but refuting the view of being different by nature. That is, if the self and the aggregates are different by nature, then the self will not have the characteristics of the aggregates, such as arising, ceasing, and abiding, just like a horse and an ox. The self does not exist as a different entity apart from the characteristics of the aggregates, such as arising and ceasing, because when the aggregates arise and cease, the self is also considered to arise and cease. Furthermore, if the entities are different, then the body and mind

If, as can be identified in various places, the two, self and aggregates, must be grasped as being of different entities, then they cannot be grasped in that way. As it says in the Root Wisdom: "The self is not from the aggregates, nor is it elsewhere. If there were a self apart from the aggregates, it would be completely non-existent." Because it is said so. Even so, just like a chariot, the self is also established as a designation in dependence on the aggregates, which is established by the scriptures of the Sutras and the Introduction. Fourth, how does a person appear like an illusion based on that? For example, although illusory horses and cattle appear as horses and cattle, it can be determined that they are not truly existent there. Similarly, persons and so on appear undeniably to nominal consciousness, and based on the fact that reason determines that it is empty of its own nature, a determination arises that although it appears, it is an illusion or false appearance that is not established by its own entity as it appears. For this, appearance cannot be established by reason, and the absence of self-nature cannot be established by nominal validity, so both reason and nominal validity are necessary. Furthermore, even if it is recognized that it is not truly established, it will still appear as true to the nominal mind, and at that time, thinking that this appears like an illusion, that is, it is not established as it appears, will also become a way of appearing like an illusion. Images and illusory horses and cattle, and people in dreams, etc., although they appear as those things, but they are not truly existent there, which can be determined by nominal validity. However, although the aggregates and so on appear to be true, they are not truly established, and others cannot determine this unless they enter the Madhyamaka school, because the former is coarse and the latter is subtle. Third, the way to apply these reasonings to other phenomena is: just as the reasoning that was explained for the chariot and the self and aggregates, it should also be applied to all phenomena such as vases, pillars, and cloths, etc., thereby preventing establishment by their own nature and determining them to be without self-nature. As it says in the Compendium: "Just as the self is, so are all sentient beings. Just as all sentient beings are, so are all phenomena." Because it is said so. Second, determining the absence of self of phenomena: phenomena refers to things other than the self of a person, and there are many ways to determine that its own nature is empty, but in the Introduction, it is done according to the intention of "not self, different from self", etc.
