This is because endurance and rational harm are confused as one. Although the arising and ceasing of the conventional, etc., cannot be examined by the reasoning that investigates the ultimate, this is not a harm, because they cannot be discovered by the reasoning that investigates the ultimate, but they are discovered by the reasoning that investigates the conventional. Second, the examination of whether or not a valid cognition is established is also unreasonable. In the Samadhiraja Sutra and the Bodhisattvacaryavatara, it is said that eye consciousness etc. are not valid cognitions, which means that the consciousness of the eyes, ears, etc. of worldly people are not valid cognitions that see reality, but it does not mean that they are not valid cognitions that see forms, sounds, etc. If the eye consciousness etc. of worldly people are valid cognitions for forms, sounds, etc., then are they mistaken or not mistaken? If they are mistaken, then it contradicts that they are valid cognitions. If they are not mistaken, then these consciousnesses should appear to establish forms, sounds, etc. by their own nature, then that is also too much. If you think so, there is no fault, because these consciousnesses are mistaken about their own appearing object, their own characteristics, and although they are not valid cognitions for them, they do not contradict valid cognition in general. Third, the examination of whether or not the four alternatives of arising exist is also unreasonable. If it arises by nature, then it must arise from any of the four alternatives of self, other, etc. However, because it does not arise by nature, but arises dependently, it prevents arising from any of the four alternatives. Therefore, it is established that arising dependently itself arises in a way that is free from the four extremes. Fourth, the way of negating the four alternatives of existence and non-existence etc. is also unreasonable. In the Madhyamaka treatises, the meaning of negating that things are existent, non-existent, and both is that it negates that they have inherent existence. It is not like you say, it is not existent, nor is it non-existent, nor is it both, nor is it neither. Because saying that would lead to a contradiction in commitment. Because when saying that, as soon as you say "neither", you commit to "neither is not", which is "both is". If some of these people say that we do not accept any of existence, non-existence, etc., so there is no commitment or vow, so there is no fault. That is also unreasonable, even if that is the case, it will become a commitment and a vow, because there is no commitment and a vow.

Therefore, what was previously promised and vowed is the promise and the vow. Afterwards, regarding these instances, the way in which the Madhyamaka-svatantrika establishes self-nature, which is established by many scriptural and logical proofs, should be understood there. Second, the scope of the object to be refuted is narrow: Some say that the object to be refuted is self-nature, and it also has three characteristics, namely, that its essence is not produced by causes and conditions, and that its state does not change into another, and that its establishment does not depend on others. This is unreasonable, because for things like the nature of phenomena, they have these three characteristics, so it would follow that the truth of their existence cannot be refuted on top of them. If refuting these three characteristics on top of conditioned phenomena means emptiness of self-nature, then even the realists would necessarily understand the meaning of no self-nature, but that is not their intention either. Such a self-nature with three characteristics has even been promised by the Protector Nagarjuna, because the suchness of the emptiness of self-nature of all phenomena is established by scripture and reason as having three characteristics. Third, there are three points in identifying the object to be refuted in one's own system: the actual object to be refuted, whether or not it can be applied to others, and whether or not the difference of ultimate truth can be applied. The first point is: In general, there are two types of objects to be refuted: the object to be refuted on the path and the object to be refuted by reasoning. The first is the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge, etc., which exist on the knowable. The second object to be refuted by reasoning is divided into coarse and subtle. The coarse ones are like sound being permanent and primordial matter, etc. In the subtle aspect, there are also differences in the views of the two Madhyamaka schools, but the object of clinging to the innate ignorance that grasps that inner and outer phenomena are established by self-nature is the ultimate object to be refuted here. That ignorance imputes self-nature on phenomena, and the way it imputes is that it grasps that any phenomenon does not depend on others and exists by its own essence. The object of clinging to how it grasps is called self or self-nature. That self-nature does not exist on the person, which is the selflessness of the person, and does not exist on the eyes, ears, etc., which is the selflessness of phenomena. The self-nature of the object to be refuted does not have coarse or subtle divisions, but due to the key point of the basis of the difference, it is self on the person.
