And, the scope is small. The first part has two aspects: stating the view and demonstrating its unreasonableness. The first part is: Some Madhyamikas say that the reasoning that examines whether birth and so on are truly established or not negates all dharmas from form to omniscience, because if everything is examined by reasoning, then there is not even a particle of something that can withstand analysis, and it negates the four possibilities of existence, non-existence, etc., because there is no dharma that is not included in them. Furthermore, the wisdom of the noble ones who see reality sees that there is no birth, cessation, bondage, liberation, etc., so there is no birth, etc.; if they existed, then they would have to be seen by them. If birth, etc., exist, then can they withstand the examination of the reasoning that investigates reality, or not? If they can withstand it, then they would become truly existent; if they cannot withstand it, then how can reasoning not negate them? Similarly, are birth, etc., established by valid cognition or not? If they are established, then it contradicts the wisdom of the noble ones who realize reality seeing that there is no birth, etc.; the worldly eye consciousness is not a valid cognition, so it is unreasonable to establish them through it; if they are not established through valid cognition, then it contradicts reasoning, so existence is also unreasonable. If it is thought that birth, etc., do not exist ultimately, but exist conventionally, then this is also unreasonable, because it is said in the *Entering the Middle Way*: If that reasoning is also unreasonable in convention, then (it cannot be established). If birth, etc., do not arise from the other three possibilities, but must arise from something else, then this is also unreasonable, because it is said in the *Entering the Middle Way*: arising from another, is also not in the world. Therefore, it is said that birth, etc., should be generally negated without adding the distinction of ultimate. The second part, demonstrating its unreasonableness, has two aspects: demonstrating that this view negates the characteristics of Madhyamika, and demonstrating that the stated harms are merely apparent. The first part has three aspects: identifying the characteristics of Madhyamika, explaining how this view negates them, and how the Madhyamika responds to it. The first part is: As it is said in the *Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning*: By this virtue may all beings, etc., as it is said, in the case of the result, the excellent things to be obtained are the two kayas of Dharma and Rupa, and as the cause for obtaining them, in the stage of the path, one must accumulate the two accumulations in union, and also in the base stage, one must have certainty in the cause-and-effect relationship that this result arises from this conventional cause.

It arises from the depths of the heart, and it depends on gaining certainty that phenomena do not have even a particle of inherent existence established by their own nature. If one well ascertains the nature of the two truths of the foundational period in this way, then on the basis of no inherent existence, all the natures of samsara and nirvana, such as arising and ceasing, bondage and liberation, can be reasonably established. Otherwise, due to not well understanding the way to negate the object to be negated by reasoning, wrong conceptions will arise, thinking that if it exists, it must exist inherently, and if it does not exist inherently, then it does not exist at all. Second, how does that system negate that characteristic? In the system of the Protector Nagarjuna, it is permissible to establish all actions on emptiness established by inherent existence, but your system holds that if there is no inherent existence, then there is nothing, and without applying the distinction of ultimate reality to the object to be negated, generally negating arising and ceasing, etc., this negates that characteristic. Third, how did the Madhyamikas respond to that? To summarize, the realists hold that if things are empty of inherent existence, all actions are impossible, therefore they believe in being established by inherent existence and argue against those who say there is no inherent existence. Moreover, they argue that if things do not exist by inherent existence, then they must not exist. In response, the Protector said in the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way: If all this were not empty, there would be no arising and no ceasing, and the four noble truths would not exist for you. And: For whom emptiness is possible, for him all is possible; for whom emptiness is not possible, for him all is not possible. Etc., in the aspect of being empty of inherent existence, all actions are reasonable and possible, and in the aspect of not being empty of inherent existence, all actions such as cause and effect are impossible, as explained in this text and as extensively explained by Glorious Chandrakirti in the Clear Words. Second, there are four ways in which the reasoning that negates is shown to be similar: whether it can or cannot withstand reasoning, whether it is established or not established by valid cognition, whether the four extremes of birth are or are not, and the negation of the four extremes of existence and non-existence cannot be a harm. To explain these in detail would be too much, so to summarize, first, the examination of whether it can or cannot withstand reasoning is unreasonable, because you examine whether it can or cannot withstand reasoning
