Moreover, this also happens before. The order of mind pliancy arising first and body pliancy arising later is: when special joy arises in the mind due to samadhi, the wind that causes body pliancy to arise in the body arises due to the power of mind pliancy that makes the mind workable. Because that wind permeates the parts of the body, the unpleasant state of the body naturally dissolves, and body pliancy arises. The preliminary sign of the arising of pliancy is that the person feels that his head is heavy, but it is not an uncomfortable heaviness. The time when shamatha is actually attained is when great feelings of happiness arise in the body at the time of the initial attainment of body pliancy, and great feelings of joy also arise in the mind. That coarse feeling agitates the mind, so the joy in the mind becomes fleeting, and at that time shamatha has not yet been attained. After that, when that fleeting joy disappears and the mind does not waver from the object but remains stable, then shamatha is initially attained. Second, the general way of progressing on the path based on this is: in general, shamatha alone is also present in non-Buddhists, so it is not necessarily the true path. However, all the samadhi paths of the noble ones of the three vehicles are attained by relying on the union of shamatha and vipashyana. Therefore, after generating such shamatha, cultivate vipashyana, and progress on the path through the yoga of the union of shamatha and vipashyana. Moreover, this must be related to the view of realizing selflessness. The union of shamatha and vipashyana that is separate from the view of realizing selflessness is also present in non-Buddhists, but this may only suppress the manifestation of afflictions of desire, and cannot completely abandon the seeds of afflictions. Third, there are two ways of progressing on the mundane path: before progressing on the path with aspects of quiescence and coarseness, it is necessary to attain shamatha, and the way to become detached from desire by relying on shamatha. To illustrate these briefly: First, by cultivating the path with aspects of quiescence and coarseness through the gate of individually discerning characteristics, it is necessary to attain such shamatha beforehand. Individually discerning characteristics is encompassed by the near-attainment vipashyana of the first dhyana, and this must be accomplished by relying on prior shamatha. Second, it has been said before.

Even if one meditates on just such a state of calm abiding, it is not possible to abandon afflictions. Therefore, one must rely on it and, through the two paths of having the aspect of truth and having the aspect of serenity and roughness, one must become free from attachment to desire. However, if one does not meditate on the path of stainlessness that has the aspect of truth, then even if one meditates only on the aspect of serenity and roughness, one will never be able to abandon the afflictions included in the higher realms. This is because even non-Buddhist yogis meditate on the aspect of serenity and roughness. In short, calm abiding alone is not sufficient, so one must generate insight. Moreover, it is necessary to have insight that realizes selflessness, which will be explained later. Second, there are four points in explaining how to cultivate insight: relying on the conditions for insight, the divisions of insight, the method of cultivation, and the degree of accomplishment. The first is: Relying on a spiritual friend who is learned in the definitive and interpretable scriptures transmitted from the two great chariots (Nāgārjuna and Asaṅga), listening to the scriptures, and generating a view that realizes suchness through hearing and thinking is an indispensable cause and condition. This has three parts: identifying the definitive and interpretable scriptures, how Nāgārjuna's intention was explained, and how to establish the view. The first is: Those who wish to realize the meaning of suchness must rely on the scriptures of the Victorious One. Since the scriptures have various meanings depending on the disposition of the trainees, one must rely on the scriptures of definitive meaning to realize suchness. Although there are differences in the definitive and interpretable as divided by the two great chariots, here one must follow the division of the definitive and interpretable from the Sutra Taught by Inexhaustible Intelligence, because Nāgārjuna also considered this sutra as dividing the definitive and interpretable, and Je himself also followed this. Second, how did the explanation of Nāgārjuna's intention come about? Āryadeva was regarded by great Madhyamikas such as Buddhapālita, Bhāviveka, Candrakīrti, and Śāntarakṣita as a trustworthy figure like Ārya. Those teachers followed Ārya, and Lord Atiśa also mainly followed that system. Our old father, Je Rinpoche himself,
