Even if forgotten, one should re-engage with the object of focus. As it is said in the Madhyamaka-hrdaya: 'The elephant of the mind wanders astray; to the stable pillar of the object, bind it tightly with the rope of mindfulness, then gradually subdue it with the hook of wisdom.' So it is said. Second, the method of eliminating faults is not discussed here. Third, indicating the duration of a session: So, how long should one maintain mindfulness attached to the object? Some previous teachers have suggested that initially, one should do short sessions with many repetitions, as prolonged sessions can lead to weariness, resulting in dullness and agitation. Alternatively, maintain it for an hour or two, or as long as one is able. Third, how to proceed after focusing on the object, divided into two parts: how to proceed when dullness and agitation arise, and how to proceed when free from dullness and agitation. The first part has two points: relying on antidotes when dullness and agitation are not recognized, and relying on antidotes without effort to abandon them even when recognized. The first part has two points: recognizing dullness and agitation, and the method of generating awareness to realize them. First, agitation is: focusing on a pleasing object, the mind is not pacified and scatters outward, belonging to the category of desire, a mental factor that engages in the manner of craving for the object. If the mind scatters and wanders due to the power of other afflictions or other objects, that is not the agitation here. Dullness is: the grasping of the object of focus is loosened, a mental factor without a very clear object. If it is a mental torpor without any clarity or lucidity, that is not dullness. Second, the method of generating awareness to realize dullness and agitation is: if one can continuously generate mindfulness, one can prevent forgetting the object and wandering astray, thereby also eliminating the arising of dullness and agitation, and it also becomes easy to recognize dullness and agitation. As before, while relying on mindfulness, pay particular attention to whether one is scattering away from it, and maintaining the mind is the key to cultivating awareness. Second, relying on the antidote of non-effort is: if one does not make an effort to stop dullness and agitation as soon as they arise, it is a very great fault. Therefore, one should cultivate the effort of fabrication as its antidote. Here, there are two points: recognizing the mind of effort, and

The methods of preventing sinking and agitation, and identifying the causes of sinking and agitation. Firstly, the mental factor that moves and urges the mind towards any object, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral, is attention or mind. If sinking and agitation arise, it is necessary to have the attention that actively engages in abandoning them. Regarding the method of abandonment, sinking of the mind occurs when the mind is excessively withdrawn inwards, causing a loss of focus on the object of meditation. Therefore, the remedy is to bring to mind a pleasing object, such as an image of the Buddha, or to contemplate appearances such as sunlight, and to maintain a firm grasp on the object of meditation. Furthermore, elevating the mind by seeing benefits and qualities is an excellent method for reversing sinking. Secondly, there are many causes for the arising of sinking and agitation, such as conceptual thoughts about desirable objects, drowsiness, sleep, and states of mental darkness. In particular, agitation is the mind's attachment to desirable objects, belonging to the category of desire. Therefore, the remedy is to cultivate a mind of aversion, such as contemplating impurity and impermanence. Sinking arises from causes such as excessive inward withdrawal of the mind, overeating, and drowsiness. To prevent these, one should elevate the mind, remember the qualities of the Three Jewels, meditate on the benefits of the mind of enlightenment, and contemplate the difficulty of obtaining leisure and opportunity. Thirdly, when free from sinking and agitation, when the mind is free from sinking and agitation and enters into a state of equanimity on the object of meditation, effort or exertion is a fault of samadhi. Therefore, the remedy is to cultivate equanimity. One should avoid both excessive effort and laxity, allowing the mind to remain equally on the object of meditation, and become accustomed to naturally entering and abiding. When practicing shamatha, it is necessary to abandon the five faults and rely on the eight applications, as it says in the Madhyantavibhaga: "Five faults should be abandoned, eight applications should be relied upon, arising from the cause of reliance." Laziness and instructions, forgetfulness and sinking and agitation, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults. Place and abiding therein, cause and effect as well. Not having spoken of the object, and understanding sinking and agitation, abandoning them with manifest application, naturally entering when pacified. Like that, laziness.
