It is the samadhi that generates joy and happiness. The nature of Vipassana is: the wisdom that discriminates the object of focus while abiding in the state of Samatha itself. Fourth, the reason for meditating on both Samatha and Vipassana is: for example, when a bright lamp and not being moved by the wind come together, one can see things very clearly; if it is not clear or is moved by the wind, one cannot see things clearly. Similarly, if one possesses the wisdom that ascertains the meaning of suchness without inversion and the mind abides without wavering, then one can clearly see suchness; if one does not possess these two, then one cannot clearly see the meaning of suchness. Therefore, it is necessary for both to come together. Even before obtaining both Samatha and Vipassana, one can see the meaning of the selflessness of suchness, but that is like a lamp moved by the wind, the mind is very agitated, so the general meaning of selflessness is also not very clear. As it is said, when Samatha is accomplished, the fault of agitation can be averted, and the general meaning becomes clear. Therefore, before obtaining Samatha and Vipassana, no matter how much one examines the meaning of suchness with reasoning that investigates, one can only suppress the manifestation of afflictions and establish the habit of liberation, but one cannot stop the afflictions. Because, the complete antidote that destroys afflictions from the root is Vipassana, and that also must rely on Samatha. Fifth, the order is: As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "By the Vipassana that is fully endowed with Samatha, one knows that afflictions are completely destroyed, therefore one should first seek Samatha." Therefore, one should first accomplish Samatha and then meditate on Vipassana. Because, Vipassana arises from repeatedly examining the object of focus while abiding in the state of Samatha, and it does not arise before that. Sixth, there are three ways to study each: Samatha, Vipassana, and the way to study the union of the two. The first has three: the conducive conditions for Samatha, the way to meditate on Samatha, and the standard for the accomplishment of Samatha. The first has six: residing in a suitable place, having few desires, knowing the Dharma, completely abandoning many activities, pure morality, and abandoning the conceptual thoughts of desire. The first is: As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: Where should the wise person practice?

As it is said: Well-obtained, good place, good land, good companions, possessing the means for yogic bliss. Secondly, do not be particularly attached to good and many resources. Thirdly, be content even with only a few poor resources. Fourthly, abandon distractions such as engaging in trade, being too intimate with householders and renunciates. Fifthly, protect the self-imposed restrictions of the two vows, avoiding any wrongdoing. Sixthly, knowing that all contaminated things, whether pleasing or displeasing, are subject to destruction, do not be particularly attached to them. These six are important because they are the causes or conditions for the arising of samadhi. Secondly, regarding the method of cultivating calm abiding, there are two parts: preparation and the main practice. First, one should also cultivate the nature of the objects and aspects of the six preparatory dharmas and the two types of individuals. Secondly, there are two parts: what kind of conduct and the order of meditation. First, the physical conduct is to be on a comfortable seat, one should have the eight aspects of physical conduct, that is, the legs in either the vajra posture or the half-lotus posture, the eyes not too open or too closed, but focused on the tip of the nose, the body as a whole should be upright and straight, the shoulders level, the head neither too high nor too low, not tilted, but straight, the teeth and lips naturally relaxed, the tongue touching the upper palate, and the breath flowing gently. Secondly, regarding explaining the order of meditation, there are two parts: how to generate samadhi without faults, and the order of generation. First, there are three parts: what to do before focusing on the object, what to do during focusing, and what to do after focusing. First, initially, prevent laziness and repeatedly cultivate faith by seeing the qualities of samadhi. Then, generate a strong desire to accomplish samadhi. Then, constantly engage in diligence in samadhi, and when calm abiding with the bliss of pliancy is achieved, no matter what virtuous deeds are done, one will not feel weary. Secondly, there are two parts: identifying the basis of the object of focus and how to settle the mind on it. First, there are two parts
