Concerning the general structure of objects of focus and the object of focus in this context. First, there are three points: the essence of the object of focus, by whom and on what is the focus directed, and the types of objects of focus. The first point has four aspects: pervasive objects of focus, practice for purification objects of focus, the objects of focus of the wise, and objects of focus for purifying afflictions. The first type of object of focus is all phenomena such as the skandhas. The second type of object of focus is that those with desire contemplate impurity, those with hatred contemplate loving-kindness, and those with ignorance contemplate dependent arising and the distinctions of elements, etc. The third type, the objects of focus of the wise, are the five: skandhas, elements, sense bases, dependent arising, and what is and is not the case; contemplating these dharmas after negating self. The fourth is, in order to purify afflictions, contemplating these and the sixteen aspects such as impermanence. Second, summarizing by whom and on what is the focus directed: whichever affliction is heavier, one should practice the corresponding uncommon antidote. For example, those with heavy desire practice impurity contemplation, up to those with pride contemplate the distinctions of elements. Third, the types are: the image, appearance, and reflection that arise in the samadhi held in the mind, or the general meaning. Second, the object of focus in this context is: generally speaking, as mentioned before, there are many supports for objects of focus, but here, for many purposes, one should contemplate the image of the Buddha. As it says in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Like a body of golden color, the protector of the world is always adorned, whoever focuses their mind on that object, that Bodhisattva is called equipoise." Therefore, first find a well-made painted or sculpted image of the Teacher, look at it and accustom yourself to it appearing in your mind. Do not merely think of it as a painting or sculpture, but learn to see it as the image of the actual Buddha. Among the coarse and fine parts of the image, one should first take the coarse part as the object of focus, and then the fine part. At that time, one should first rely on a single object of focus and practice. If you change many different objects of focus, it will become an obstacle to the arising of samadhi. The teacher Hero said: Steadfast on one object of focus.

In the manner, one should rely on the mind's thought. Through many objects of focus, the mind becomes afflicted with disturbing emotions. So it is said. The standard for obtaining the object of focus is: from head to foot, visualize clearly several times in sequence. Finally, when the overall body is brought to mind, if about half of the coarse limbs can appear in the mind's view, then one should be content with that much and maintain focus. If one desires more and visualizes other parts, although it may become slightly clearer, it will become an obstacle to the mind's abiding, so it should not be done. Furthermore, one must maintain focus on the appearance that arises. At that time, whatever is clearly visible, whether the overall body or a part, one should focus on that clearly visible part; if it becomes unclear, then one should focus on the whole. Regarding the appearance of different shapes, sizes, colors, numbers, and postures, one should not follow these changes, but should focus as one initially visualized clearly. Second, regarding how to fix the mind on this, there are three points: establishing the faultless method, eliminating the faulty method, and indicating the duration of a session. The first point is: the samadhi to be cultivated here has two special characteristics: it possesses the power of clarity, where the mind is extremely clear, and it possesses the abiding aspect of non-conceptuality, where one abides single-pointedly on the object of focus. For the slow emergence of such clarity, dullness obstructs; for single-pointed non-conceptuality, excitement obstructs. Therefore, dullness and excitement are the main obstacles to the accomplishment of pure samadhi. Explaining on the basis of recognizing these two, the way to generate the samadhi that is a conducive condition for the accomplishment of calm abiding here is: one needs both a mind that does not stray from its single-pointed focus and an awareness that observes whether it has strayed or not. The former is mindfulness, and the latter is awareness. If mindfulness diminishes, the object of focus is lost, therefore mindfulness is the root and awareness is the branch. Generally, mindfulness, as stated in the Compendium: What is mindfulness? It is the non-forgetting of a familiar object, having the function of non-distraction. In short, it is to hold onto the object of focus that has appeared without forgetting it. Awareness is the observation of whether the object held by mindfulness has been forgotten or not, that is,
