And the forgetting of key instructions, sinking and excitement, effort and non-effort, these five faults, and faith and desire and diligence and extreme familiarity and mindfulness and awareness of sinking and excitement and the mind of effort and abandonment, these are the eight efforts. Secondly, the order of the arising of the abiding of the mind based on it has three parts: the actual order of arising, the way it is accomplished by the six powers, and the way it has four mental engagements. First, there are nine abidings of the mind: placing the mind, continuous placing, repeatedly placing, close placing, taming, pacifying, thoroughly pacifying, single-pointedness, and equanimity. The first is: gathering the mind from external distractions and directing it inward to the object of focus. The second is: focusing on that which has been focused on and continuously abiding. The third is: if it becomes distracted, recognizing it and again focusing on the object of focus. The fourth is: abandoning the mind's distraction, focusing on the object of focus and making it grow. The fifth is: thinking about the qualities of samadhi and making the mind happy. The sixth is: seeing distraction as a fault and pacifying the displeasure with samadhi. The seventh is: pacifying things that arise such as attachment, dullness, displeasure, and sleep. The eighth is: striving for effortless entry. The ninth is: when the mind becomes equanimous, then abandoning it. These arise from the previous one to the next. Secondly, the way it is accomplished by the six powers is that there are six powers: the power of hearing, and similarly, the power of thinking and mindfulness and awareness and diligence and familiarity. Which minds are accomplished by these? The power of hearing accomplishes the mind of placing. Thinking accomplishes continuous placing. Mindfulness accomplishes both repeated placing and close placing. Awareness accomplishes both taming and pacifying. Diligence accomplishes both thorough pacifying and single-pointedness. The power of familiarity accomplishes the mind of equanimity. At the time of the ninth abiding of the mind, even if there is no effort, the mind naturally enters into samadhi, but it is still not the actual calm abiding.

What has not been obtained will be explained. Third, there are four ways of applying the mind to it: striving to enter, entering intermittently, entering without interruption, and entering spontaneously. Among these, in the case of the first two stages of mind, it is the application of striving to enter; then, in the case of the five stages of mind, it is the application of entering intermittently; in the case of the eighth stage, it is the application of entering without interruption; and in the case of the ninth stage of mind, it is the application of effortless and spontaneous accomplishment. Thus, the reasons for accomplishment and entry, etc., are many, so they are omitted. Third, there are three aspects to how tranquility is accomplished: the boundary between whether tranquility is accomplished or not, a general explanation of how to progress on the path based on tranquility, and a specific explanation of how to progress on the mundane path. The first has two parts: the actual meaning and its implications. The first is: When this ninth stage of mind is attained, there are two possibilities: either lightness is attained or it is not. If lightness is not attained, then the single-pointed samadhi of desire is similar to tranquility, but it is not actual tranquility. Therefore, to attain tranquility, lightness must be attained, and there are two kinds of lightness: physical lightness and mental lightness. As it says in the Compendium of Topics: "What is lightness? It is the ability of body and mind to eliminate the continuum of afflictions of body and mind." The afflictions of body and mind are when body and mind cannot be used as desired to accomplish virtuous deeds. The two lightnesses of body and mind are free from these afflictions, making body and mind extremely capable of virtue. Among these, physical lightness is a special tactile sensation of the body, not consciousness. Among the two lightnesses, mental lightness arises first, and physical lightness arises later. When only mental lightness has arisen, tranquility has not yet been attained. From then on, after physical lightness has arisen, it is then established that tranquility is first attained. That is, at the end of the previous ninth stage of mind, when mental lightness is attained, the inability of the mind disappears, and the mind becomes very easy to use. Then, when physical lightness is attained, the inability of the body disappears, and the body becomes very easy to use. This is in terms of complete
