De. The venerable Chandrakirti said, "All qualities follow after diligence." This shows that diligence is very important. Because for those who lack diligence and are very lazy, it is difficult to accomplish any of the two benefits. As it is said in the Sutra on Mindfulness, "Whoever has one laziness, that person has no dharma at all." Third, there are two types of division: the division itself and the method of generating it. The first has three types: armor, virtuous dharma gathering, and sentient being benefiting diligence. The first is: In order to dispel the suffering of each sentient being, even if it is necessary to dwell in hell for countless great kalpas, one should not be discouraged for the sake of attaining Buddhahood, let alone short periods of time and small sufferings? Like this, one puts on a great armor of mind. If one possesses such armor, one will quickly attain enlightenment. If one is afraid and lazy in accomplishing the vast benefit of sentient beings, and wants to quickly attain enlightenment, not only will one not quickly attain enlightenment, but it will become very long. The second, virtuous dharma gathering diligence is: To strive for the perfect accomplishment of the six perfections. The third, sentient being benefiting diligence is: To strive according to the situation for the eleven things to be done. Second, there are four methods for generating diligence: abandoning adverse unfavorable factors, gladly accepting diligence, and thereby making body and mind capable. The first has two types: clearly being able to practice the path but not doing so, and thinking that one cannot do it and becoming discouraged and not doing so. The first has two types: division and the method of abandonment. The first has two types: procrastination and laziness in clinging to inferior affairs. The second, the method of abandoning these is: There are three thoughts on this, namely that this body quickly decays, that one falls into the lower realms after death, and that it is very difficult to obtain a good basis again. The second way to abandon is that it is unreasonable to cling to small things and abandon important things. Because clinging to inferior affairs that cause suffering in the future, and consciously making the main effort on this, is deceiving oneself. After thinking this, one should stop. The second is: Thinking that one cannot do things that are so difficult, one becomes lazy.

To avoid these, there are three things that need to be overcome: discouragement about the result to be obtained, discouragement about the causes that can lead to obtaining the result, and discouragement about the environment in which one finds oneself. The first is: do not be discouraged by thinking that becoming a Buddha is difficult. The Buddha Bhagavan said that even a bee can become a Buddha if it makes effort. Therefore, do not think that you do not have effort; if you have effort, you can also achieve Buddhahood. Generate great joy in this way. All the Buddhas of the three times were once like us, and they became Buddhas through practice. Therefore, if I strive to practice, I can also achieve Buddhahood. Overcome discouragement in this way. The second is: do not be discouraged by thinking that the method of becoming a Buddha requires doing many difficult things, and that you cannot do them. For those difficult things, if you gradually get used to them starting from small things, you can also do big things. As it is said: If you get used to it, there is nothing that will not become easy. The third is: becoming a Buddha requires staying in samsara and achieving it by benefiting sentient beings. If you feel that you cannot bear the suffering of samsara, that is also not right. Although Bodhisattvas dwell in samsara to benefit sentient beings, because they realize that the nature of samsara is empty like an illusion, they have no suffering in body and mind, but rather generate happiness and joy. As it is said: For those who have compassion, what is there to be weary of, even if they dwell in samsara for the benefit of others? And, the noble ones have completely abandoned the suffering of old age and death. That is what was said. Second, there are four conducive conditions: intention, stability, the power of joy, and the power of abandonment. The first is: having gained a firm conviction in the law of karma, be willing to adopt what is beneficial and abandon what is harmful, and strive in practice. The second is: the effort that is started in practice should not be reversed, but should be carried through to the end. The third is: when entering at the beginning, enter with joy, and after entering, do not want to interrupt, and enter joyfully even when you are not free. The fourth is: if you are too hasty, causing boredom and fatigue in body and mind, take a break for a while, avoiding being too tense or too relaxed.
