There are ways in which one should not give, in terms of time, place, object, purpose, and need. The first is, for example, not giving afternoon food to someone who is ordained and taking full ordination in the afternoon. The second is not giving alcohol, garlic, onions, human meat, or food and drink contaminated with impurities, or anything unsuitable, to someone who is diligent in keeping vows. The third is not giving scriptures to those who seek opportunities or want to do business, and so on. The fourth is not giving poison, weapons, and so on if one knows or suspects that it will harm others in this life or the next. The fifth is not giving anything that will harm others in any way in this life or the next. Secondly, the way to give is to give with a smiling face, etc., in accordance with the prohibitions mentioned above. If many beggars come at the same time, and there is not enough for everyone, give to those who came first. If it is wealth, give to the poor rather than the rich, and try to make others understand. If it is scriptures, give to those who have faith, intelligence, and a great desire for knowledge. Secondly, what should one do if one cannot give? One should think that these things will abandon me and be exhausted, and that if one is always stingy with these things, the fault is great. Therefore, one should turn one's mind to giving. If one really cannot do it, one should not refuse with harsh words unless one has explained and persuaded them not to give. Whether one can give or not, one should offer all one's belongings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, etc., and generate the idea that these things belong to them, which is very beneficial and skillful, as the Buddha said. Thirdly, relying on the antidote to the obstacles to giving, there are four obstacles: unfamiliarity, decline, attachment, and not seeing the results. The antidote to the first obstacle is that because one is not used to giving, one cannot give, so now one gives in order to get used to it. The antidote to the second obstacle is that because one did not give in the past, one has become poor now, so one should think that one should give away what little one has now. The antidote to the third obstacle is that one has suffered from attachment to possessions from the past until now.

Therefore, through wisdom, one abandons attachment and gives that object away as charity. The fourth is, considering that giving will produce fruition, enjoyment, and even enlightenment, one dedicates the merit of giving towards complete enlightenment. The second is giving through mere intention: From the depths of one's heart, one imagines countless kinds of objects to be given and cultivates the habit of generating the intention to gladly give these to sentient beings. The fourth is to summarize the meaning of these: Based on generating the mind of enlightenment, one makes the noble and difficult-to-give gifts the object of aspiration, relies on the antidote to miserliness, strives to make the mind of giving increasingly grow, and devoutly aspires and dedicates to enlightenment. The second, the perfection of discipline, has five aspects: the nature of discipline, the method of entering into it, the classification of discipline, how to practice at the time of cultivation, and the summary of meaning. The first is: The mind of renunciation that turns away from harming others, along with its basis, is discipline. The second is: If one does not protect discipline, one will fall into the lower realms, therefore one must strive to protect discipline. The benefits of discipline are twofold: higher rebirth and definite goodness, which should be understood elsewhere. Third, there are three classifications: the discipline of vows, the discipline of gathering virtuous qualities, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. The first is: From the perspective of motivation, it is the ten renunciations of abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions. From the perspective of its own nature, it is the seven of body and speech. From the perspective of vows, the vows of householders and renunciates, and the renunciations and vows common to these, are discipline. The second, the discipline of gathering virtuous qualities, is: Focusing on the virtuous qualities of the six perfections, etc., one generates what has not yet arisen, maintains what has already arisen, and increases it further. The third, the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, is: Through the eleven activities of benefiting sentient beings, one accomplishes benefits appropriately according to the different situations of sentient beings. The detailed classifications of these are extensively explained in the explanation of the chapter on discipline in the Bodhisattva-bhumi, which appears to be very wonderful. Fourth, how to practice: One should practice with the six excellences and the six perfections, the six excellences being as before. Fifth, the summary of meaning: The basis of giving
