. All this arises from the desire for one's own happiness. Why say more? Children act for their own benefit, while the Buddhas act for the benefit of others. Look at the difference between these two! If one does not truly exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not attain Buddhahood, and there will be no happiness even in samsara. Thus, one should contemplate. Secondly, this mind can be cultivated through habit. For example, someone who was once very unfriendly and even frightening, later becomes very friendly when one becomes harmonious with them. And someone who was once cherished and friendly may become unfriendly due to other circumstances, and the mind will also perceive it that way. Similarly, looking at others as oneself and oneself as others will arise if one repeatedly habituates oneself. As it is said: "Through the power of such habituation, even fear that one has never heard of will not bring joy without it." Like that. If one thinks, "How can I have the same thought of 'mine' for another's body, since it is not my body?" Then, if we summarize the meaning of what is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, even though one's own body is formed from the seed of one's parents, who are other than oneself, due to the power of habit, self-grasping arises. Similarly, if one habituates oneself to cherishing others' bodies as one's own, then this thought will arise. Thirdly, the actual method of practice is: here, it is not about visualizing oneself as others and others as oneself, but about exchanging the positions of the mind of self-cherishing and the mind of other-cherishing, that is, cherishing others as oneself and abandoning oneself as others, generating such a mind. Its meaning is that even if one suffers oneself, one can endure it, wishing that sentient beings may not suffer. Therefore, one trains in taking on the suffering of others and giving one's own happiness and virtue to others. Self and others are also established in relation to each other, not by their own nature. For example, like the thought of "that mountain" and "this mountain," and the women and possessions that one owns, once they fall into the hands of others, the thought that they belong to others arises. As it is said in the Compendium of Trainings: "Self and others are relative, like the near shore and the far shore, false as they are." Like that. Here, during the giving and taking, there appears to be a practice of using a wind-powered elevator, which is a complete limb.

That is how it is done. Since it does not appear in the direct teachings of the scriptures, even if it is not done, there will be no deficiency or addition. In any case, one must get used to the attitude of giving one's own body, possessions, and roots of virtue to others, and taking all the suffering of others upon oneself. This practice of exchanging self and others is the way to cultivate both loving-kindness and compassion, for giving happiness and virtue to others is loving-kindness, and taking suffering upon oneself is cultivating compassion. In short, the main and indispensable cause for the arising of bodhicitta is the two, loving-kindness and compassion, and the object of its arising is sentient beings, so it is necessary to clearly understand the desire to accomplish benefit and happiness for sentient beings. There are many ways to accomplish this, but here it is through the two, loving-kindness and compassion, by way of removing suffering and giving happiness. By familiarizing oneself with this, altruism and bodhicitta will arise easily. Third, the measure of the arising of this mind is that when explaining the measure of the arising of the two, loving-kindness and compassion, one should also understand that this is the measure of the arising of bodhicitta. Although it is not so clear, after the three, loving-kindness, compassion, and altruism, have arisen with unfeigned experience, the actual mind of enlightenment, as described in the definition, will truly arise. Fourth, there are many parts about taking the aspiration mind with rituals, but if summarized, it is the three: obtaining what has not been heard, protecting what has been obtained, and making amends for what has been lost. First, the object from which to take, the basis by which to take, and the ritual of how to take, these three. The first is to receive from a lama who has the bodhisattva vows. The second is to receive as a basis for being able to generate bodhicitta. Third, the ritual is divided into three parts: preliminary, main part, and conclusion. First, the preliminary includes taking refuge and accumulating merit, and cultivating the mind in three aspects. The first aspect includes arranging the supports and offerings, making requests and taking refuge, and proclaiming the precepts, these three are the same as the stages of the path. Second, accumulating merit is to perform the seven-branch offering in the presence of the lama and the supports. Cultivating the mind is to clearly visualize the objects of loving-kindness and compassion. The third, the main ritual, is to be seated in front of the lama and invite all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions.
