If they had happiness, how wonderful it would be, wishing them to have happiness, and thinking of making them have happiness. The benefits are: In the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: "In hundreds of thousands of billions of lands, immeasurable and countless offerings, those supreme beings constantly offer with this, but it cannot match the number of loving thoughts." And in the Ratnavali, it says: "Even if the food of three hundred gazelles is given three times a day, it cannot match the merit of a moment of love." From there, even if one does not become liberated, one can obtain the eight qualities of loving-kindness. As it is said. The method of meditation is that just as compassion arises when one thinks of how sentient beings are tormented by suffering, so too, love arises when one repeatedly thinks of how sentient beings lack happiness. First, one should cultivate the desire to have happiness, and then the desire to establish them in happiness in a gradual manner. The order is the same as compassion, starting with meditating on relatives first. Second, the object of compassion is sentient beings who are suffering, and the aspect is the thought of wishing them to be free from suffering, wishing them to be free from suffering, and making them free from suffering. If one meditates on them without distinguishing them, it will arise, but if one meditates on them by distinguishing them, it will arise purely and become stable. The method of meditation is to think about how sentient beings are tormented by various kinds of suffering, as mentioned before. If one first thinks about this on oneself, it will become the key point, otherwise it will not become the key point so much. The standard for the arising of great compassion is said to be that it should arise to the extent that a mother wishes her son to be free from suffering. However, just as suffering arises in the mother at that time, it is not necessary for the meditator of compassion to necessarily experience suffering, because if that were necessary, then suffering would also arise in the Buddha. Therefore, the mother's wish for her son to be free from suffering is not just empty words, but comes from the bottom of her heart. Similarly, compassion is not just empty words or artificial, but must arise from the bottom of the heart, and that is the meaning. The standard for the arising of great love should also be understood by this. Third, higher intention is that although it has been slightly touched upon during the practice of love and compassion, here it is specifically directed towards those sentient beings who lack happiness and are tormented by suffering, I

One should treat sentient beings with compassion, thinking, "I will liberate them from suffering," and even try to influence them with words alone. Second, cultivating the mind that strives for enlightenment: Although wanting to attain enlightenment in order to benefit others is also a form of aspiration, here it is not limited to that. One should also remember the qualities of the Buddha's body, speech, and mind, and generate the desire to attain these qualities, not only for the sake of benefiting others but also with the conviction that one must attain perfect enlightenment for one's own benefit as well. Third, recognizing the result of cultivation—bodhicitta: The general characteristic is as stated in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "The generation of the mind [of enlightenment] is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment." This means that with the aim of benefiting others, one aspires to attain perfect and complete enlightenment, and it is the main mind of the Great Vehicle—a special awareness of mind and intellect that is consistent with one's own desire to attain perfect enlightenment. In terms of classification, there are two types: aspirational bodhicitta and practical bodhicitta. There are different views on the difference between these two. For example, just as when going to a city, one first has the thought of wanting to go there, and just as the act of lifting and placing one's feet when going to a city involves thought, so too, first, the thought of "May I become a Buddha" arises, and this is aspirational bodhicitta; thereafter, from the moment of taking vows, that mind transforms into practical bodhicitta. The Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life states: "The difference between wanting to go and actually going is like knowing the difference between action and inaction; likewise, the wise should gradually understand the difference between these two." The First Steps in Meditation states: "Therefore, initially wanting to become a Buddha in order to benefit all sentient beings is aspirational bodhicitta. Thereafter, taking vows and entering the ranks [of Bodhisattvas] is practical bodhicitta." That is how it is. Second, according to the treatises of Shantideva, there are three points: the benefits and drawbacks of exchanging self and others and not exchanging them; the ability to generate [bodhicitta] if one is accustomed to the thought of exchanging self and others; and explaining the actual method of cultivation. The first point is: The Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life states: "All the happiness in this world comes from wanting others to be happy; all the suffering in this world,
