Depending on arising, the stages of mind training, the extent of its arising, and the manner of holding it with rituals. The first part has three points: arising dependent on four conditions, four causes, and four powers. First, the four conditions are: arising from seeing or hearing the inconceivable power of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas; arising from listening to and admiring the Mahayana scriptures; thinking, in the degenerate age when the teachings are nearing decline, 'I should generate that mind of great benefit'; and arising from thinking that generating such a mind in such a time is rare. Second, the four causes are: having a complete lineage, being embraced by a virtuous friend, loving sentient beings, and not being discouraged by the hardships of samsara; it arises dependent on these. The four powers are: the self-power of wanting to become a Buddha independently; the other-power of wanting that due to the influence of others; the power of habit, where now, due to the power of past habituation, it arises merely upon hearing the praise of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas; and the power of long-term habituation to virtues such as listening to the Dharma. However, the desire to attain Buddhahood and loving-kindness and compassion are the main causes of arising. Furthermore, one should generate it by remembering the benefits of the mind of enlightenment. The benefits are extensively explained in the Gandavyuha Sutra, and also in the Sri-vinaya-prsna Sutra: 'Whatever merit there is in the mind of enlightenment, if it had form, it would fill the entire realm of space, and it would be even greater than that.' And so on, it is said, and there are many other sources as well. Second, the stages of training that mind are twofold: the lineage from Jowo (Atisha) and the lineage from Shantideva. The first method is the sevenfold cause and effect: perfect complete enlightenment arises from generating the mind of enlightenment. That result is from the cause of higher intention, and that is from compassion, and that is from loving-kindness, and that is from gratitude, and that is from remembering kindness, and that is from remembering (all beings as) mothers; these are the seven causes and effects. This has two aspects: establishing certainty about the order, and actually training in the order. The first point has two aspects: showing that the root of the Mahayana path is compassion, and how the other causes and effects become its causes and effects. First, great compassion

It is very important in the beginning, middle, and end. First, if you want to take care of sentient beings and bear their burden, you must have compassion. Because if you have compassion, you will generate the mind of enlightenment and be willing to bear the burden of taking care of others. If compassion is weak, you will not be willing to benefit others, and therefore you will not generate the mind of enlightenment. It is also important in the middle, because if you want to study the infinite deeds of the bodhisattvas for the benefit of sentient beings, you must have compassion. Because without compassion, you will not have the desire to save sentient beings from suffering, and therefore you will not want to study special practices. If you have it, the opposite will happen. It is also important in the end, because even after becoming a Buddha, you will be motivated by great compassion to do all kinds of things for others. If there is no compassion, you will abandon the benefit of others like the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Great compassion is important in the beginning, middle, and end, as stated by glorious Chandrakirti. The benefits and praises of compassion are as extensively stated in the Sutra of Inexhaustible Wisdom and the Sutra of the Collection of True Dharma. Second, in order to generate a stable compassion that desires sentient beings to be free from suffering, it is necessary to think of that sentient being as a pleasing object. The three, meditating on the mother, remembering her kindness, and repaying her kindness, are the means to establish the pleasing aspect. From this, love arises, and from that, a special compassion arises. Inserting higher intention between compassion and the mind of enlightenment is because Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also have mere love and compassion. But bearing the burden of saving all sentient beings from suffering and placing them in happiness is something that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have. Therefore, here, we generate higher intention endowed with such love and compassion. Second, training in stages has three aspects: Training the mind in seeking the benefit of others, training the mind in seeking enlightenment, and identifying the result of the training—the generation of the mind. The first aspect has two parts: The basis for generating that mind, and the way to generate that mind. The first part has two aspects: Establishing equanimity towards sentient beings, and establishing sentient beings as pleasing objects. First, preventing the division of sentient beings by attachment and aversion, thereby achieving impartiality
