Afflictions are primary. Without afflictions, even if much karma has been accumulated, just as sprouts do not arise from seeds without moisture and soil, etc., karma without the co-operative condition of afflictions does not produce the sprout of suffering. If afflictions are present, even without previously accumulated karma, newly accumulated karma will cause the accumulation of future suffering. Therefore, it is important to recognize afflictions and apply their antidotes, and there are four aspects to this: identifying afflictions, the order of their arising, the causes of afflictions, and the faults of afflictions. First, the general characteristic [of afflictions] is that they disturb the mind-stream and abide within its continuum. As for the individual characteristics, of the ten afflictions, attachment is the mental factor that arises when focusing on a pleasing external or internal object, clinging to the object and being difficult to separate from it, like oil soaking into cloth. Anger is the tormenting of the mind when focusing on beings, suffering, weapons, thorns, etc., which are the source of suffering, i.e., hating that object. Pride is the arrogance of mind that arises in dependence on the view of the transitory collection, focusing on the high and low, good and bad of internal and external [phenomena], and is characterized by haughtiness. Ignorance is the affliction of being deluded about the Three Jewels, the Four Noble Truths, and the law of karma and its effects. Doubt is thinking, when focusing on the Four Noble Truths, the Three Jewels, and the law of karma and its effects, whether they exist or not, whether they are true or not. The view of the transitory collection is the wisdom-affliction that, when focusing on the aggregates of grasping, sees them as "I" and "mine," clinging to a self and what belongs to a self. The extreme view is the wisdom-affliction that, when focusing on the self grasped by the view of the transitory collection, sees it as permanent and unchanging, or as annihilated, without any connection between this life and future lives. The view of holding views as supreme is the wisdom-affliction that, when focusing on any of the three—the view of the transitory collection, wrong view, or extreme view—and the aggregates that arise from these views, holds them as supreme. The view of holding ethics and discipline as supreme is the wisdom-affliction that, when focusing on bad ethics, physical and verbal discipline, and the aggregates that arise from these practices, sees them as pure liberation. Wrong view is the wisdom-affliction that sees that there are no past and future lives, no law of karma and its effects, etc., and that clings to Ishvara and other lords as causes. Second, the order of arising is that ignorance or the view of the transi-

How is it that afflictions are the root, and relying on it, other afflictions arise? As it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: 'If there is self, then one knows there is other. From the division of self and other, attachment and hatred arise. Because these are completely interconnected, all faults will arise.' Thus, relying on ignorance or the view of the perishable aggregate as self, attachment, hatred, and so on arise, and various wrong views also arise. Third, there are six causes for the arising of afflictions: the basis is the latent tendencies of afflictions; the object is the object that causes afflictions to arise; association is relying on bad friends; explanation is listening to wrong teachings; habituation is the cause of being familiar with afflictions in the past; and attention is paying attention to what is unpleasant and pleasant, permanent and impermanent, etc., in an inappropriate way. Fourth, the faults are that afflictions cause all the causes that harm this life and future lives. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Afflictions destroy oneself, destroy sentient beings, and destroy morality.' And so on, it is said, and many other sources also appear. Second, there are two ways to accumulate karma: identifying the karma to be accumulated and how to accumulate it. First, there are two: mental karma and karma resulting from thought. The first is: the mental factor of mind that moves and motivates the mind and objects that are compatible with oneself, which is mental karma. The second is: the karma of body and speech that is aroused by it. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'Karma is thought and what is done by it. Thought is mental karma, and from it arise the karma of body and speech.' As it is said. The Vaibhashikas divide karma into revealing and non-revealing karma and assert that both are forms. Master Vasubandhu refutes this and asserts that thought, which operates together with the revealing karma of body and speech, is karma. In general, karma has three types: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Here, virtuous karma is divided into two types: contaminated and uncontaminated, and also into three types: merit, non-merit, and unwavering karma. The first is: virtuous karma included in the desire realm. The second is: non-virtue. The third is: contaminated virtuous karma included in the upper realms. Uncontaminated karma is the karma in the continuum of the noble ones that is not included in the three realms. Second, the way to accumulate karma is: in general, both ordinary beings and noble ones accumulate contaminated karma.
