Thinking through the twelve doors. The first part has two points: the faults of suffering in samsara, and the order of entering into the origin of samsara. The first part has two points: the necessity of first explaining the truth of suffering, and the actual method of meditating on suffering. The first point is: What is the necessity of first explaining the truth of suffering? There is one. First, one must recognize that one is like being immersed in an ocean of suffering, one must recognize suffering, and one must know suffering as suffering. If one knows suffering, one will have the desire to be liberated from suffering. At that time, one will see that suffering must be reversed, and if one does not reverse its cause, the fruit of suffering will not be reversed. If one thinks about what kind of cause it is, one will know that the truth of the origin is the cause, so the truth of suffering comes first, and then the truth of the origin is taught, which is the order. The origin is the two, contaminated karma and afflictions. When one sees that these two can be reversed, one can understand that the cessation of suffering can be attained, so the truth of cessation is practiced after the origin. Then, one will know that the path must be practiced as a means to attain it, so the truth of the path is taught last. For example, one first recognizes the disease, and then takes medicine in order to obtain the happiness of the disease being pacified. As it says in the Uttaratantra of Maitreya: Disease is to be known, the cause of disease is to be abandoned, the abode of happiness is to be attained, and medicine is to be practiced. Suffering, the cause, its cessation, and the path, are to be known, abandoned, understood, and practiced. So it is said. Second, thinking about the truth of suffering has two points: the general suffering of samsara and the individual suffering. The first has three parts: the eight sufferings, the six sufferings, and the three sufferings. The first is the eight sufferings: the suffering of birth, the suffering of aging, the suffering of sickness, the suffering of death, and the four sufferings of encountering what is unpleasant, separating from what is pleasant, not finding what is desired, and the five aggregates of close grasping being thought of as the nature of suffering, for a total of eight. The first has five points: birth is accompanied by suffering, that is, when one is born from the womb and from eggs, one is born with intense suffering. The suffering of being in a bad state is: being in accordance with the side of afflictions.

Including unsuitable and other adverse conditions. To become a place of suffering means that if there is birth, all sufferings such as old age, sickness, and death will arise. To become a place of affliction means that after being born, one relies on various objects and generates various afflictions. Unwillingly separating means that relying on birth, one unwillingly separates from body and life and dies. The suffering of aging also has five aspects: aging gradually and completely deteriorates the body, power completely deteriorates, senses completely deteriorate, enjoyment completely deteriorates, and life gradually and completely deteriorates. The suffering of sickness has five aspects: the nature of the body changes and deteriorates, one mostly dwells in suffering and displeasure, the food and drink of enjoyment are unsuitable and unpleasant, one must use them unwillingly, and one will be separated from the life force. The suffering of death also has five aspects: separation from perfect enjoyment, separation from beloved relatives and close ones, separation from retinue, separation from the body, and experiencing intense suffering and displeasure at the time of death. The suffering of encountering unpleasant things also has five aspects: encountering enemies and hatred, being harmed by them, being threatened by bad words, being threatened by death as if falling into an abyss, and fearing falling into lower realms. The suffering of separation from pleasant things also has five aspects: separation from cherished relatives and others, uttering lamentations for them, harm to the body, grief in the mind, and the destruction of enjoyment. The suffering of seeking desires but not finding them also has five aspects: these are similar to separation from pleasant things, and their essence is the suffering of not achieving the desired goal, no matter what one does, whether it be agriculture or business. In short, the five aggregates of clinging have five aspects in the sense of suffering: being a vessel of manifest suffering, being a vessel of manifest suffering, the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and becoming a vessel of the suffering of conditioned existence. That is to say, relying on this aggregate, one invites future sufferings, becomes the basis of old age, sickness, etc., and the adverse conditions of these two.
