Thinking of him as the teacher. The chief of the Sangha is the Noble Sangha, as well as other ordinary Sanghas, remembering their qualities through speaking the Dharma, contemplating the Dharma, being a field of Dharma, holding the Dharma, relying on the Dharma, offering to the Dharma, and acting according to the Dharma. Second, understanding the distinctions means understanding the distinctions between the Three Jewels, as explained in the Uttaratantra. And as explained in the Compendium, the Buddha is characterized by manifest complete enlightenment, the Dharma is its result, and the Sangha is characterized by truly accomplishing through instructions. The activity is prophecy, abandoning afflictions and suffering, and causing joy. Devotion to this is respectful service, manifestation, and respectful association. Practice is offering and service, cultivating through yoga, and common enjoyment. Recollection is remembering the individual qualities of the three. Increasing merit is based on Dharma and wealth, the first of which is based on the Buddha and Dharma, and the second is based on the Sangha. Third, commitment is taking refuge by regarding the Buddha as the teacher who shows the way, the sacred Dharma as the actual refuge, and the Sangha as the companion who helps to accomplish refuge. Fourth, not speaking of others means that after knowing the difference between internal and external teachers and teachings, one takes refuge in the Three Jewels and does not take refuge in teachers, etc., who are not in accordance with the Three Jewels. The Buddha is one who has exhausted faults and perfected qualities, while other teachers are the opposite. Regarding the teachings, the Victor's teachings are a path of ease and a result of ease, stopping karma and afflictions and samsara, not deceiving those who desire liberation, and are entirely virtuous. Other teachings are the opposite of these. Therefore, one can also understand the differences between the followers. Fourth, there are two things to be learned: those that come from the Compendium and those that come from the instructions. The first has two sets of four sentences, from the Compendium: Relying on the holy person who follows the Buddha, properly attending to the scriptures and the realized true Dharma, and practicing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma.

And, there are four ways to befriend those who strive for Nirvana: not indulging the senses, taking the basis of training, having compassion for sentient beings, and making offerings to the Three Jewels in the three times. Secondly, there are two types of instructions that arise from the oral tradition: individual and common. The first has two aspects: prohibitive and affirmative trainings. The first has three: having taken refuge in the Buddha, one does not take refuge in worldly deities; having taken refuge in the Dharma, one abandons harming sentient beings; and having taken refuge in the Sangha, one does not associate with non-Buddhists. The first is that having taken worldly deities as the ultimate refuge, one does not take refuge in them anymore. However, it is not contradictory to rely on them to accomplish temporary favorable conditions, just as one relies on a doctor when afflicted by illness. The second is that one abandons all kinds of harm to any sentient being, such as killing, beating, or imposing unbearable burdens. The third is that one does not become like-minded with those who do not trust or respect the Three Jewels. Secondly, there are three affirmative trainings: one does not place Buddha images made of poor materials or poorly crafted on places of toil, and one abandons all forms of contempt; one abandons disrespect even for a single verse of the Dharma; one does not place scriptures in places of toil, and one never carries them together with shoes, etc.; and one should not disrespect the actual Sangha or those who merely hold the signs of ordination. Secondly, there are many common trainings, among which the most important are taking refuge by remembering the distinctions and qualities of the Three Jewels, and diligently making offerings by remembering their kindness. There are offerings and the intention to make offerings. The first has ten aspects, which can be summarized as: offering to Buddha images, offering to stupas, making obvious offerings to them, making non-obvious offerings, making offerings with one's own hands, having others make offerings, offerings of wealth and respect, vast offerings, non-afflicted offerings, and offerings of practice. The first nine are mainly material offerings, while the offering of practice is the four immeasurables, the four collections of Dharma, taking refuge, and remembering the past and future.
