After that, people holding swords and spears and other weapons do not allow that water to be drunk, and the water also appears as pus and blood, and they do not want to drink it. Those with inner obscurations have mouths like the eye of a needle, throats like a horse's tail, and extremely large abdomens like a country. Food cannot enter the mouth, and even if it can enter, it cannot pass through the throat, and even if it passes through the throat, the abdomen cannot be filled, and even if it reaches the abdomen, it will burn. The food and drink themselves also have obscurations, and one must cut one's own flesh to eat, and one must consume impure things, and one cannot enjoy pure things. Due to the influence of karma, the winter sun is cold, and in spring, the moonlight feels hot. The root of these is located five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa, and the others are derived from it. In the great treatises, these types of Yamaraja are also summarized and explained as pretas. In terms of lifespan, one month of humans is considered one day for pretas, and they are said to live for five hundred years. Thinking about the suffering in the lower realms, and thinking that if one were to experience such suffering oneself, it would be difficult to bear, one should repeatedly contemplate this in one's mind. After that, in order not to be born in those places, one must take refuge, abandon non-virtue, practice virtue, accumulate merit, purify obscurations, and constantly strive. Secondly, explaining the method of attaining happiness in the next life, there are two parts: entering the gate of the Dharma, practicing the supreme refuge; and generating the faith of confidence, which is the root of all happiness and well-being. The first part has four points: the cause of taking refuge, the object of taking refuge, the manner of taking refuge, and the order of the precepts of taking refuge. The first point is: death is imminent, and after death, one has no autonomy over where one is born, but is subject to the power of karma, and is born according to how karma propels one. Moreover, the non-virtuous deeds that cause rebirth in the lower realms have been done a lot and are being done, and apart from a few virtuous deeds, none have been done, and the virtuous deeds that have been done have been destroyed by anger and the like, and even if they have not been destroyed, they have not been done for the sake of the next life, but for the sake of this life alone. Therefore, going to the lower realms is inevitable, and the refuge that can protect one from that is the Three Jewels.

No. Even the powerful worldly gods are not (refuges), let alone earth-owners like ghosts and goblins. Therefore, one must take refuge in the Three Jewels. Second, there are two aspects to the object of refuge: identifying the object and the reasons for taking refuge. First, as stated in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": "The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha are the refuge for those who desire liberation." Second, there are four reasons for taking refuge: the Buddha himself has attained the state of fearlessness, is skilled in taming beings to be subdued, possesses great compassion, and is not pleased by mere material offerings but by offerings of practice. Therefore, the sacred Dharma taught by him and the Sangha who practice that Dharma are also worthy of refuge. Third, there are four ways to take refuge: knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, making a commitment, and not speaking otherwise. First, remembering the qualities of refuge, that is, remembering the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. To summarize these, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is adorned with a complete body and clear marks and signs, so that all who see him are delighted; the Buddha's speech has sixty branches and accords with the languages of beings; the Buddha's mind directly sees all knowable objects in a single instant and possesses great love without partiality. The activities of the Buddha's body, speech, and mind are spontaneously accomplished, continuous, and without discrimination. If beings to be tamed are capable of being guided, there are none that the Buddha does not guide, as it is said in the scriptures: "What decline have you not led beings away from? What perfection have you not bestowed upon the world?" In short, one should remember the qualities of the Buddha from various angles, thereby generating faith, so that one can meet the Buddha, complete the accumulations, purify obscurations, generate the path in the continuum, and so on, which have many benefits. The qualities of the Dharma are that all the qualities of the Buddha arise from the Dharma, and therefore are also the qualities of the Dharma. The truth of the path prevents faults, the truth of cessation pacifies faults, and the Dharma of scripture perfects the Dharma of realization.
