, and in the future, considering that mountains, seas, the earth, and all containers and contents will be destroyed, let alone anything else, resolve to practice the Dharma. The third root is to contemplate that at the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma is beneficial, for which there are three reasons. The first is that at the time of death, only white and black karma will follow, not relatives, friends, close acquaintances, attendants, etc., so it is of no benefit. The second is that wealth and enjoyment, etc., cannot be taken away even a particle, so it is of no benefit. The third is that one must even leave one's own body, so it is of no benefit. Considering these, resolve to practice the Dharma that benefits the future from this very moment. Thus, when contemplating the nature of impermanence, although many scriptures have been spoken, only a few are exemplified. The Compendium says: Whether it is a Buddha, a Pratyekabuddha, or a Shravaka disciple of the Buddhas, if they abandon this body, what need is there to mention ordinary people? It also says: Wherever one dwells, there is no place that can prevent death. Not in the sky, not in the ocean, not even if one enters the crevices of mountains. It also says: Many men and women, and those who are in their prime, will also die, so saying that this person is young, what assurance is there of being alive? Some will die in the womb, likewise, some will die at the place of birth, likewise, some will die while toddling, likewise, some will die while running completely. Some are old, some are young, some are in their prime, they will gradually disappear, like ripe fruits falling. It also says, The Jewel Garland says: The Lord of Death dwells within conditions, like a butter lamp in a red wind. It also says: The conditions for death are many, while the conditions for life are few. It also says, The Letter to a Friend says: The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, and the seven suns, burned by fire, these sentient beings, will not even leave ashes, let alone very weak people? Thus it is said. In short, as the sutras say, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent. After death, nothing other than karma will follow, as The Letter of King Kanishka says: When the Lord of Death leads, except for virtue and non-virtue, all beings will return, no one will follow you. It also says: After death, the body and

As it is. As it is said, "Like white and the result of karma that follows." Secondly, contemplating the suffering of beings in how the next world will transform, after death, one will definitely be reborn in either of the two paths, and if one is reborn in the lower realms due to non-virtue, what will happen? First, one should contemplate that suffering. As the venerable Nagarjuna said: "One should remember the extremely hot and cold, the state of hell for a single day. One should also remember the pretas emaciated by hunger and thirst. One should look at and remember the animals with their great suffering of ignorance. Abandon those causes, practice the causes of happiness, the human body of Jambudvipa which is difficult to obtain. When it is obtained, the causes of the lower realms, should be cut off with great effort." As it is said. Remembering the suffering of samsara and the lower realms is very important, contemplating the way one is tormented by suffering, thereby subduing pride, knowing that suffering is the result of non-virtue, thereby abandoning non-virtue, and because the virtue of abandoning non-virtue brings happiness, thereby rejoicing in doing good, from one's own experience, generating compassion for others, generating pure refuge from the fear of the lower realms, and generating a pure mind of wanting to be liberated from samsara and seeking liberation. Therefore, there are three ways to contemplate the suffering of the lower realms: the suffering of hell, animals, and pretas. The first is, there are the great hells, the neighboring hells, the cold hells, and the temporary hells. If these are explained in detail, it would be too much, so to speak briefly. The first is, from here, thirty-two thousand yojanas below, there is the Reviving Hell, and from there, every four thousand yojanas, there are seven other hells, in the first Reviving Hell, when those beings gather together, the weapons that arise from the power of karma strike each other and kill each other. Then they fall to the ground, and a voice comes from the sky saying: May you all be revived. When they stand up again, they strike each other with weapons as before, and in this way they experience immeasurable suffering. In the Black Line Hell, the beings born there are seized by the hell guards, various lines are drawn on their bodies, and then they are split open with weapons along the lines. Briefly
