Just as someone who aspires to Buddhahood and studies the six perfections and the two stages is called a great person. In general, there are other types of small individuals, but here the actual small individual is a special one in relation to the former. This pervades those who have not entered the path, because they only pursue higher rebirths and not liberation. For the middling and great individuals, some consider it to pervade those who have entered the path, but I think that even those who have not entered the path are included, because the two types of people who desire liberation from samsara and primarily pursue Buddhahood are there. If one thinks that because there is talk of the path of the middling and great individuals, they have entered the path, then since there is talk of the path of the small individual, that would also entail entering the path, and the two paths of good and bad destinies would also become paths, which would be difficult to accept. Second, there are two reasons for guiding through the paths of the three types of individuals: the meaning of guiding through them and the actual reason for guiding. First, although it is said that there are three types of individuals, the other two paths are included as branches of the path of the great individual and are part of it. However, it is not that one is guiding the actual paths of the small and middling individuals, but rather that some paths common to both are taken as preliminaries for guiding the path of the great individual. Second, there are two reasons for guiding in this way: the actual reason and the necessity. First, the mind of enlightenment is the gateway to the Mahayana path, so before the mind of enlightenment arises, one must tame one's mind-stream. This also depends on contemplating the suffering of the lower realms in the case of the small individual, and contemplating the suffering of the higher realms in the case of the middling individual, in order to ripen the mind-stream. When one contemplates in this way in the case of the great individual, the two, love and compassion, which are the cause of the arising of the mind of enlightenment, will become a special cause of arising. Therefore, one should know that training in the path common to the small and middling individuals is a supreme method for generating the mind of enlightenment. Moreover, during those two stages, taking refuge, actions and their results, and accumulating merit and purification also become causes for the arising of that mind, and on top of that

Therefore, according to the order, first, take hold of the aspiration mind ritual, and generate the intention to learn its teachings and the conduct of the six perfections, etc. Then, take the engagement mind ritual and learn the teachings as much as possible, and protect the root downfalls of the bodhisattva vow. The order of learning the teachings, the six perfections, and the three trainings in general, as well as calm abiding and insight, will be explained. Then, one should enter the path of mantra, as it is said in this (treatise): "Like this, after taming one's mindstream with the common paths, one must enter the secret mantra. After entering it, one will quickly complete the accumulations." Second, the necessity: If the Dharma categories of the small and medium persons are branches of the path of the great person, then it would be sufficient to call it the stages of the great person's path. Why is it necessary to call it the stages of the path common to the small and medium persons? Answer: There are two necessities for this: to prevent those who do not practice the paths of the small and medium persons from boasting as great persons, and because there are great differences in benefits for the three types of intelligence: superior, medium, and inferior. The way the benefits differ is: if one does not guide the lower two and guides the great person from the beginning, the path of the great person will not arise as it is. If one guides gradually from the lower ones, not only will the lower path arise, but also the path that possesses the characteristics of the upper path will arise. Otherwise, if one abandons the lower ones, the upper ones will not arise, and ultimately one will gain nothing. Second, the actual way to take the essence has three parts: cultivating the mind in the path common to the small person, the path common to the medium person, and the stages of the path of the great person. The first part has three: the actual content of cultivating the intention of the small person, the standard for the arising of the intention, and eliminating the wrong conceptions about it. The first part has two: generating the intention to seek the next life, and generating the means for happiness in the next life. The first part has two: remembering death because one cannot stay in this world for a long time, and contemplating the happiness and suffering of the two destinies of how the next life will transform. The first part has four: remembering death, the benefits of meditating on it, how to generate this mind, and the actual way to remember death. The first is: because the inverted clinging to permanence grasps as permanent and does not allow one to engage in seeking the Dharma, therefore, as its antidote, one must meditate on impermanence.
