Therefore, among the coarse and subtle, the thought that the coarse impermanence of death will not come harms. Generally, everyone has the thought that they will die someday, but the thought that they will not die today, and not die today, continues until death. Because one does not apply the antidote to it, one thinks that one needs this and that in this life, and mainly strives for the sake of this life alone. This thought does not allow the mind to engage in the achievement of higher realms and definite goodness in the next life, so one will degenerate from great matters. Therefore, to counteract it, one should meditate on impermanence. Second, the benefit of meditating is that, having meditated in this way, propelled by that very mind, one will engage in the achievement of higher realms and definite goodness in the next life, and thus attain great matters, and the root of all goodness will be established. Third, what kind of mindfulness of death should be generated? Fear of death, like a relative, arises even in those who have not trained in the path, so that is not what is generated here. Due to the power of karma and afflictions, one will eventually die, and after death, being subject to karma, one will go to the lower realms and experience great suffering in the cycle of existence, so one is afraid of that. Merely being afraid is not enough; one must find a way not to be afraid. That is, because one will inevitably be separated from body, possessions, and so on, it is crucial to repeatedly think of impermanence. If one meditates in this way, strong attachment to them will be reversed, and one will engage in accomplishing the benefit of the next life, so one will not be afraid of death. Fourth, how to meditate on mindfulness of death? One should meditate through three roots, nine reasons, and three determinations. First, there are three: one will definitely die, there is no certainty when one will die, and at the time of death, nothing but the Dharma will help. First, there are three reasons: first, no matter what kind of body one takes, one will die, no matter where one lives, one will die, and all beings of the three times are destroyed by death, without distinction, and one cannot escape by fleeing, and medicine and mantras, etc., cannot avert it. Second, there is no addition to life, and there is constant subtraction, that is, no matter how many years one can live, years, months, days, and morning and evening will pass, and life gradually decreases.

Furthermore, there are no new additions. For example, just as each thread is pulled and gradually woven until it reaches the bottom; when leading an animal to slaughter, each step brings it closer to death; the rapid flow of water gradually descends and never returns; the shepherd also gradually leads the livestock back to their dwelling; the shadow of the sun gradually increases, decreases, and disappears, and life is exhausted and death occurs. The third is: dying without having time to practice Dharma while alive; even if there is time, the conditions for practice are not complete; being unable to practice Dharma due to illness, etc.; being controlled by others and unable to practice Dharma; considering the situation of being busy with sleep and other affairs and having no time, one should resolve to practice Dharma right now. From the second root (thinking about the impermanence of death), although it is certain that one will die within a hundred years from today, it is impossible to determine which day in between will come. Therefore, one thinks that there is no certainty of dying today; one does not know when the Lord of Death will come, and if he comes, one can only die with regret; one does not know whether tomorrow or the next life will come first, so one must prepare for death. There are three reasons for this, the first being: in general, the lifespan of beings in Jambudvipa is uncertain, in the past there were lifespans of countless years, and in the future there will even be lifespans of only ten years; although a certain lifespan is mentioned, it cannot be certain that one will live to that age; one may have it this year, but may not have it next year; one may have it in the morning, but may not have it in the evening; some are still in the womb or just born; some are children; some are in their prime; some are old, and the time of death is uncertain, one should think like this. The second reason is to think that there are many causes of death and few causes of survival. There are many things that are harmful to the body and life, such as harm from humans and non-humans; harm from wild animals, etc.; falling into a cliff; harm from external elements such as fire and water; diseases caused by internal element imbalances; taking food as a cause of survival, but the food is unsuitable; houses collapsing, etc., one should think that there are many causes of death and few causes of survival. The third reason is that the body is fragile and easily destroyed. Weapons, stones, wood, etc., and even small harms such as thorns, can lead to the destruction of the body and life.
