Their non-dependence is the intrinsic nature of essence, and its absence is selflessness. As it is said. Tāranātha considers that the "self" here refers to the self with five characteristics as desired by the outsiders, and it seems that he proves the absence of such a self with reason, which is one aspect. Although there are many types of reasoning for establishing the selflessness of a person, the noble Nāgārjuna said in the Precious Garland of the Middle Way: The person is not earth, not water, not fire, not wind, not space, not consciousness, nor all; what else is the person other than that? The person is composed of six elements, therefore it is not real. In short, the person, individual, or self is not truly established, because it is merely imputed on the aggregates that are assembled and collected, but it is not the earth element of one's own body—flesh, bones, etc., nor the water element—blood and serum, etc., nor the fire element—the internal and external temperature of the body, nor the wind element—the winds in the channels and breaths, nor the space element—the empty spaces in the body, nor the six consciousnesses with their retinues, nor merely their collection, because there is no person who is essentially different from them and independently existing. The Root Wisdom of the Middle Way says: If the aggregates are the self, then it should have birth and death. If the self is other than the aggregates, then it should be without the characteristics of the aggregates. It means, what is this so-called self or person like? Does it refer to these five aggregates themselves, or is it something different from them? If it is the former, it is not reasonable, because just as the aggregates do not take birth, the self should also not take birth, and just as there are five aggregates, I should also be many. The first is established, because it is not seen that the five aggregates go to the next world together. The second is established, because the Introduction says: If the aggregates are the self, then therefore, because of the many, the self should also become many. Because it is impossible for one person to have many selves at the same time, because everyone sees that they hold to one self. The second reason is that if the self is different from the five aggregates, then it does not
