Also, it is not for the sake of, that is, for this reason. What is the reason for this? Because the noble beings have directly realized that all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, the nature of the unconditioned dharma, therefore it is said for the sake of distinguishing well, that is, establishing. These are in the view of the wisdom of the noble beings in equipoise, referring to being free from elaboration. The Tathagatas must be considered to be enlightened in name, but in reality they are not enlightened. As mentioned above, the Tathagata is also merely imputed in dependence on his own skandhas. Apart from that, his own undefiled skandhas, whether single, aggregate, or anything that is different in nature from them, are not the Tathagata. As the venerable Nagarjuna said in the twenty-second chapter of the Root Wisdom: "The Tathagata is not the skandhas, nor is he other than the skandhas, in the skandhas there is no Tathagata, in the Tathagata there are no skandhas. The Tathagata has no skandhas, where is the Tathagata?" And he said: "If there are no skandhas, where is the Tathagata?" Here, the last two lines of the treatise are placed first for the sake of easy understanding. Thus, becoming enlightened and increasing exist in name, but not in nature, it is only a symbol. The way he teaches the Dharma is also empty of inherent existence, as it is said in the Secret Inconceivable Sutra: "The Tathagata has not even spoken a single word, nor will he speak." The meaning of this is stated in the twenty-fifth chapter of the Root Wisdom: "All elaborations are extinguished, peaceful, the Buddhas in what place, have never taught a single dharma to anyone." In the commentary it says: When the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, pass into nirvana, all elaborations are extinguished, and when they abide in the manner of not abiding in the nature of peace, the objects of clinging to signs are all extinguished, because they do not apprehend, so in this regard, the Buddhas, whether in the realm of gods or humans, have not taught anyone any defiled or purified dharma. Also, if the Buddha has not taught the Dharma to anyone, then how do these various names of scriptures appear? Saying that the teacher taught us the Dharma, this is only a dream of the object of taming who is in the sleep of ignorance.

Those things that are not dreams arise from one's own conceptual thoughts. It is said so. It is also mentioned in the Sutra Requested by Noble Akashagarbha, which is a difficult point to understand. As explained here, it will also be mentioned below, and the meaning of the Buddha not having taught the Dharma should also be understood. In short, by saying "Dharma is also not," the extreme of permanence is blocked, and by saying "Non-dharma is not non-existent," the extreme of annihilation is blocked. Having abandoned the two extremes of exaggeration and denigration, with "noble beings" and so on, it is explained that in conventional terms, the great noble beings directly realize the nature of conditioned dharmas and directly realize nirvana. Thus it is declared. In this way, although all dharmas such as becoming a Buddha and teaching the Dharma do not exist in ultimate truth, they do exist in conventional truth, so giving alms produces great merit. But compared to that, the merit of practicing listening, thinking, and meditating on this Dharma is even greater. To show this, the Bhagavan said to Subhuti: What do you think? Any son or daughter of good family, as it says in the Treasury: The four continents, the sun and moon, Mount Meru and the desire gods, The Brahma world, a thousandfold, A thousand is considered the first thousand worlds. That thousand worlds multiplied by a thousand, Is the intermediate thousandfold world. That middle thousandfold world multiplied by a thousand, Is the three-thousand great-thousandfold world. As it is said. If this three-thousand great-thousandfold world were filled with gold, silver, crystal, lapis lazuli, gems, stone essence, pearls, and coral, the seven precious things, and given as alms to others, would they accumulate a great mass of merit? In response, Subhuti replied that they would accumulate a great mass of merit, and that the accumulation of merit is only nominally established like a dream or illusion. That accumulation of merit itself is not established as an accumulation in ultimate truth, but in conventional terms, the Tathagata calls it an accumulation of merit, and thus establishes and declares it. This explains that white and black karma, past deeds and future deeds, although the past has ceased and the future has not yet occurred and is non-existent, in general, their existence must be acknowledged, and it must be believed that this is related to the mindstream of the doer, thereby producing results.
