Also, other perfections should be applied in the same way. Not only the three circles of giving, but also for any other thing, one should give without clinging to it as real. To explain it a little more, one should give without clinging to form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena as real. Form refers to external forms, the objects of eye consciousness. Sound is the object of ear consciousness. Smell is the object of nose consciousness. Taste is the object of tongue consciousness. Touch is the object of body consciousness. Phenomena are the objects of mind consciousness, that is, all phenomena whatsoever. Subhuti, all phenomena exist only as nominal designations. Since there is not even a particle of inherent existence, clinging to inherent existence is a reversed clinging. Therefore, in any case, a bodhisattva should not abide in the concept of clinging to the characteristics of clinging to inherent existence. Clinging to characteristics is another name for clinging to reality. If one is bound by clinging to reality, the faults are great, as will be explained in the example below. Although great merit arises from giving and so on bound by clinging to reality, it is certain that if one accomplishes giving and so on through the path of being free from clinging to reality, the merit will be even greater, as the Buddha taught. Why is that? Subhuti, the measure of the greatness of the accumulation of merit of a bodhisattva who gives without abiding is not easy for others to grasp, because it is difficult. To give an example, it is like the measure of the sky in the ten directions, beginning with the east, which is not easy to grasp. Subhuti, in the same way, and so on, this summarizes the meaning of the example. From the accumulation of merit such as giving, the form body of the Buddha will be accomplished. The form body is adorned with marks and signs. Subhuti, what do you think? This means, Subhuti, what do you think about this matter, how do you consider it? The Tathagata has two form bodies, that is, being endowed with excellent marks and signs. However, just because one has excellent marks and signs, should one regard that as the Tathagata? He asked. Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, it should not be regarded in that way. To differentiate a little, it is having excellent marks and signs

Just by that, one should not regard him as the Tathagata. What is the reason for that? The Tathagata said that the marks and signs of the form body are complete, but they are said to be like illusions in the conventional truth. In reality, there is no completeness of marks and signs. The Blessed One said: The marks and signs of the form body are like images drawn with lines, which are the conventional and false appearances arising from the aggregation of causes and conditions, and are not the true nature. The Blessed One said to Subhuti: The more complete the marks and signs are, the more false they are. So what is not false? The more unreal the completeness of marks and signs is, the more it is not false and true. Therefore, one should regard the Tathagata as having no truly established marks and signs. This eliminates the two extremes of the form body. The form body and its marks and signs exist in the emptiness of conventional falsehood, thereby eliminating slander; showing that there are no truly established marks and signs, thereby eliminating the extreme of addition. The former shows the form body, and the latter shows the Dharma body, so the nature body is the most important. Will there be beings in the future who believe and trust in this sutra that explains the Dharma body like this? Subhuti said to the Blessed One: In the last five hundred years of the degenerate age, when the true Dharma is about to be destroyed, and so on. The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, do not say that. It means that you should not doubt and ask whether such a person will appear in the future. Subhuti, even in the future when the true Dharma is about to be destroyed, there will surely appear Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas who are endowed with higher morality, endowed with the merits of higher concentration, and higher wisdom, that is, endowed with the three higher trainings. Those Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas did not only attend and make offerings to one Buddha in the past, and cultivate roots of virtue, but they attended and made offerings to countless Buddhas, and cultivated roots of virtue. I know that. The last five hundred years of Kashyapa
