Abiding and entering in order to attain it refers to the abiding and entering of the Arhat fruit, and if analyzed in detail, it seems that much needs to be said. The meaning of 'once-returner' is that one still needs to take birth once more in the desire realm, and 'non-returner' means that one does not need to take it. Furthermore, the fruit of the once-returner is established by abandoning the three bonds and desire and aversion towards desire, that is, by abandoning the last five lower fetters; the fruit of the non-returner is established by abandoning one aspect of desire, excitement, pride, and ignorance of the two upper realms. These are unique to the Hearers. Here, according to the Consequentialist school, all are noble beings, while according to the Compendium of Topics, the one who enters the stream-enterer can be an ordinary person, but all others are noble beings. In short, these four, the stream-enterer and so on, do not cling to the obtainer and the fruit to be obtained as true. Even if there is innate clinging to reality, the object of that clinging is not removed, because all of that is preceded by the realization of emptiness. Then, Subhuti said, 'I am an Arhat who has abandoned afflictions in name, but I do not hold 'I am an Arhat' as true.' If one were to hold it in that way, then I would also become afflicted, and therefore not an Arhat. 'I am an Arhat, because the Blessed One has nominally prophesied to me, the son of good family Subhuti, as the foremost among those without afflictions. But in ultimate reality, because I do not abide in anything, there is no prophecy of abiding in freedom from afflictions. Because in ultimate reality, the abider, the abode, and the one who abides are not established.' This is in accordance with the Consequentialist's view that clinging to reality is affliction. Not only are there no objects to be obtained, obtainers, and attainers in ultimate reality, but there is also no dharma to be taken in ultimate reality. To illustrate this, the Blessed One asked Subhuti, 'When the Tathagata was with the Buddha Dipamkara in the past, do you think there was any dharma that I obtained in ultimate reality?' Subhuti replied, 'There was not.' The name of the Buddha Dipamkara is specifically mentioned here because when the Teacher was the youth Cloud of Dharma in the past, the Buddha Dipamkara

Depending on the blessings of Dipamkara Buddha, he obtained great forbearance of non-arising dharmas. When he manifested the eighth bhumi, Dipamkara Buddha prophesied that in the future you will become the Buddha Shakyamuni. To remember this kindness, it will be explained below. Obtaining great forbearance of non-arising dharmas means that, having abandoned afflictions and having gained habitual control over the non-conceptual wisdom that directly realizes the nature of all dharmas as emptiness, not only in the state of meditative equipoise, but also in the post-meditation state, all conditioned dharmas appear only as emptiness like illusions. Because of obtaining forbearance of non-arising dharmas, all dharmas are directly seen as without inherent existence, and all that is prophesied, to be obtained, and to be enlightened are also seen as empty of inherent existence. Therefore, there is no attachment to thinking that any truly existent dharma was taken from Dipamkara Buddha. That is to say, at the time of the prophecy, the Buddha who was prophesied did not exist; the person at the time of the prophecy also does not exist when he becomes a Buddha after being prophesied. However, conventionally, the individuals between being prophesied to become a Buddha and becoming a Buddha are of the same continuum. Without separating the past and future "I"s, because there is a general "I" that follows all past and future "I"s, considering this, it was prophesied that you will become that Buddha in the future. For example, the past and future lives and the "I"s of the first and second halves of life are not this present "I", but for what they have done, one can say "I did it", and for what they will do, one can say "I will do it". Similarly, when I say "I will make this house, hat, clothes, shoes, etc.", although the house etc. do not exist, I say it considering that they will appear in the future. This is only a conventional expression, but there is no self-existent birth. If there were self-existent birth, then when one thinks of making a house etc., one would have to assume that the house etc. already exist, but that is not the case. Considering this, the Sutra Requested by Anavatapta says: Whatever is born from conditions is unborn. There is no nature of birth in it. Whatever depends on conditions is empty.
