explained. Whoever understands emptiness is mindful. Thus it was said. The reasons for establishing the absence of inherent existence, which were previously explained, also apply here. If one understands well how effects arise from causes but not by their own nature, one will understand how actions are justified in the emptiness of inherent existence according to the Madhyamaka system. And one will also attain the Madhyamaka path of the union of appearance and emptiness. Thus, to attain Buddhahood, it is shown that one must accomplish the purification of the field where one attains Buddhahood. The Blessed One said to Subhuti, if any Bodhisattva thinks, 'I will truly accomplish the adornments of the field that I have arranged with a belief in reality,' that statement is speaking untruthfully. The reason for this is that the perfect adornments of the field of the place of enlightenment arise from the accumulation of many causes and conditions, like an illusion. The Tathagata has said that those adornments do not exist in reality. However, they exist in the mind that has not been examined or analyzed, so conventionally they are called the adornments of the field. Not only the Buddha's field, but all the adornments of the vessel and contents are also imputed upon the accumulation of many parts, like houses and so on. If all these are analyzed by reason down to the finest particles, they will eventually become nothing, which is just a brief illustration. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva is to accomplish the adornment of a field, he should generate the mind in this way, without dwelling on reality. In ultimate truth, one should not dwell on anything, and one should generate the mind without dwelling on any phenomena such as forms and sounds with a belief in reality. Not only the external adornment of the field, but also the adornment of the body of sentient beings is merely an accumulation of conditions, and does not exist in reality. To show this, Subhuti, for example, if a person's body becomes as large as Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, do you think that body is large? When asked this question, he replied that the body was large. The Tathagata has said that the body itself is merely a nominal aggregate of many parts, and there is no entity, that is, no essence, that does not depend on parts. But in worldly convention, that body is called large. Therefore, what is called a body is only the conventional body that does not exist in ultimate truth. Taking the large body as an example, to illustrate the size of form

Everything should be combined in the same way. Saying it like this explains the method of meditating on the emptiness of all phenomena, both containers and contents. To show the benefits of meditating in this way, an example is given: The Blessed One asked Subhuti, 'If there are as many grains of sand in the Ganges River as there are Ganges Rivers, are those grains of sand numerous?' The answer was, 'If the Ganges Rivers themselves are numerous, then what need is there to mention the grains of sand?' Then the Blessed One said to Subhuti, 'You should generate joy and desire, and you should understand that meaning. If any man or woman were to fill worlds as numerous as the grains of sand in those Ganges Rivers with gold, silver, and the seven precious jewels as previously described, and offer them to the Tathagatas, would the merit be great?' The answer was that it would be very great. The Ganges River is the river that flows from Lake Manasarovar. There are two interpretations: one is that it is the Ganges River, and the other is that it is the great ocean. There are also two interpretations of sand: one is the commonly known sand, and the other is that it refers to particles of water droplets. From that example, the benefits of reciting, listening to, thinking about, and meditating on this text are even greater. Whoever, from this category of Dharma, even the smallest. The rest is as before. Furthermore, Subhuti and others explain the names, not only do such benefits arise from reciting and so on, but also the place or location where this text is well recited, and where the meaning of this text is explained and practiced, will become an object of offering for others. If so, then what need is there to say that the person who takes the words of this text to heart and holds them, and holds the book, and reads it, and understands its meaning, that is, knows, and practices the meaning as it is, by focusing on the meaning, will become extremely rare? In that place, the teacher Buddha or the lama, any holy person, will abide. Then, Subhuti asked what the name of this text was, and the answer was, the Blessed One said that the name of this text is called the 'Perfection of Wisdom Sutra,' and you should hold the name of this text in this way.
