If one thinks and holds, 'It is ruined,' one should not look at it and desire it in that way. Because those Bodhisattvas have not refuted or cut off any Dharma. When one realizes in that way, one realizes that the Dharma is without self-nature, but one does not realize that the Dharma does not exist. Because in the definite understanding of the wisdom that realizes in that way, although those conventional Dharmas do not exist, the wisdom does not realize that they do not exist, because although the meaning of the wisdom does not exist, it generally exists. For example, in the face of the wisdom bound by the clinging to reality, although the vase and so on that appear as emptiness do not exist, they generally exist. Furthermore, if someone fills the world with as many grains of sand as there are in the Ganges River with the seven precious jewels and gives them as charity, the merit from that is less than that of a Bodhisattva who, relying on this text of the Prajnaparamita, directly realizes the meaning of selflessness and obtains the great forbearance of the unborn Dharma in the ultimate sense. That person will generate an immeasurable and countless amount of merit from the basis of obtaining forbearance. The meaning of obtaining forbearance in the unborn Dharma has already been explained. Furthermore, the Blessed One said, 'Subhuti, Bodhisattvas should not completely grasp the accumulation of merit with clinging to reality.' Subhuti thought, 'Blessed One, should Bodhisattvas not grasp the accumulation of merit?' It seemed that a doubt arose that one should not grasp merit in name, so he asked the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, 'In name, one must completely grasp merit, but one should not wrongly grasp merit by looking at it with clinging to reality. Therefore, it is said that one should completely grasp merit in name.' Here, 'should not grasp' is to eliminate the eternal view of clinging to the accumulation of merit as truly existent, and 'completely grasp' is to eliminate the view of annihilation. Furthermore, Subhuti, if some sentient beings think with clinging to reality, 'The Tathagata goes to another place, or comes back, or gets up, or sits on a seat, or falls asleep,' if they say and ask in this way, then the questioner has not correctly viewed the Tathagata.

Now, etc., I do not understand the meaning of saying that it does not exist in the ultimate sense. Why is that? Because, Subhuti, the Tathagata does not, in the ultimate sense, go outwards in any direction, nor does he come back from any direction. For that reason, he is called a perfectly complete Buddha in name. The meaning of the word "Tathagata" is, as it says in the sutra: The Tathagata thoroughly sees emptiness, thoroughly knows it, and perfectly manifests it, therefore he is called the all-knowing one. As it is said, it is through the way of directly seeing emptiness. Although in name there are comings and goings, etc., if we consider the dharmakaya of emptiness, then comings and goings, etc., do not exist in the ultimate sense. In the section of the Eight Thousand Verses where Sadaprarudita relies on the Dharma-superior, how do the Tathagata's comings and goings, etc., occur? The ways in which Sadaprarudita asked the Dharma-superior, etc., if all the details explained later in Sadaprarudita's narrative were written down, it would be too much, so to put it briefly: In the summer, at the boundary between mountains and plains, near sandy or gray cliffs, one sees mirages appearing green. However, the water of the mirage does not come from anywhere in the beginning, nor does it actually go to any direction in the end. Similarly, the Tathagata's comings and goings, etc., are like that. Similarly, a magician transforms stones, wood, etc., into beings such as humans and animals, and various forms of Buddhas or sentient beings appear in dreams, and sounds come from a lute, etc., these do not arise from their own nature in the beginning, nor do they go to any place by their own nature in the end. The Tathagata's comings and goings, etc., are said to be similar to these examples. Furthermore, in the "Questions of the Old Woman Sutra," it says: Not only the Tathagata, but also from any birth, he has not come, nor will he go anywhere. Etc., it is also quoted and explained in other Dharma categories, and finally combined with an analogy: Sound comes from beating a drum, but the sound does not inherently reside in or arise from the wood, leather, the hand of the beater, or the drumstick, etc., in the beginning, nor does it go anywhere in the end. However, when the conditions come together, as it is said in name, it will arise and cease, and that is how it should be understood.
